‘Evil Dead Burn’ Director Wants to Remake Another Iconic Movie as a Brutal Horror Comic Adaptation
Sébastien Vaniček has revealed the classic movie he would love to revisit, and his idea could completely change how audiences see the character. The ‘Evil Dead Burn’ director recently shared that he would be interested in remaking ‘The Mask’ as a much darker and more violent horror story closer to its original comic book roots.
During a Reddit AMA promoting ‘Evil Dead Burn,’ Vaniček was asked which existing franchise or property he would like to work on if given the opportunity. His answer surprised many fans, as he pointed toward the 1994 Jim Carrey movie that became a huge box office success but moved far away from the tone of the original comics.
“I think I would dig into The Mask, but make it closer to the comic books,” Vaniček said. “The comic books are actually very, very violent and dark.”
The director’s comments quickly caught the attention of fans who have long wanted to see a more faithful adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics series. While the 1994 film became famous for Jim Carrey’s wild comedy, exaggerated expressions, and cartoon-like humor, the original comics were much more brutal and disturbing.
Created by John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke, the comics introduced a very different version of the character. Instead of being mostly a chaotic but lovable prankster, Stanley Ipkiss became a much darker figure after discovering the mysterious mask. The stories mixed extreme violence, horror, and twisted humor, creating a world that was much closer to a nightmare than a family comedy.

The difference between the comic and movie versions has always been one of the biggest discussions among fans. The film was a massive success, helping turn Carrey into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but many comic readers felt that the adaptation removed much of the darker material that made the original stories unique.
Vaniček’s interest in the comic version of ‘The Mask’ makes sense considering his previous work. The filmmaker gained attention with the horror movie ‘Infested’ before taking on ‘Evil Dead Burn,’ a project connected to one of horror’s most iconic franchises. His style has shown an interest in intense violence, disturbing imagery, and darker storytelling.
The director has also spoken about his love for ‘Berserk,’ the legendary manga series created by Kentaro Miura that is known for its brutal fantasy world and mature themes. His interest in both ‘The Mask’ comics and ‘Berserk’ suggests that he enjoys stories that combine extreme violence with strong visual identities.
A darker ‘The Mask’ adaptation would certainly be a major change from the version most audiences know. Instead of another comedy-focused remake, Vaniček’s vision could explore the horror elements of the original material and show the terrifying side of the mask’s power.
For now, there are no official plans for Vaniček to direct a new ‘The Mask’ movie. However, his comments have already sparked conversations among fans who have wanted a more faithful adaptation for years.
Would you watch a brutal, comic-accurate remake of ‘The Mask’?
After more than three decades, some viewers believe it may finally be time for audiences to meet the version of The Mask that existed before Hollywood turned him into a cartoon-like comedy character. If the franchise ever returns, Vaniček’s brutal horror approach could offer something completely different from the original film.
