Christopher Nolan’s latest epic arrived in theaters carrying one of the most star-studded ensembles of his entire career, stacking Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron into a single sprawling adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem. With a lineup that deep, it would be reasonable to assume audiences showed up chasing their favorite star.

The actual box office data tells a different story. ‘The Odyssey’ posted a massive opening weekend performance, with Friday including previews hitting 51.2 million dollars and the full three-day domestic total tracking toward 120.5 million dollars, making it the best live-action opening of the year and a career high for Matt Damon as a leading man.

According to exit polling data reported by Deadline, the reason behind that turnout comes down almost entirely to one name. More moviegoers cited Christopher Nolan himself as their primary reason for buying a ticket than any single cast member, with the director pulling in 51 percent of respondents. The film’s ensemble as a whole came in as the second biggest draw at 44 percent, while Matt Damon, the actual lead of the film playing Odysseus, ranked notably lower at just 27 percent.

That gap speaks to just how far Nolan’s own brand has grown beyond any individual actor he works with. Despite assembling arguably one of the deepest casts of his career, audiences overwhelmingly framed their decision to see the film around the director’s name attached to the poster rather than any specific performer inside it.

The polling data also revealed some interesting patterns in how fans actually secured their tickets. According to PostTrak figures cited by Deadline, 53 percent of ticket buyers purchased their seats a week or more in advance, while only 47 percent bought same day tickets for Friday, reflecting the sold out IMAX 70mm demand that had already been building for months before release.

For Robert Pattinson specifically, the film also marked a notable career milestone of its own. ‘The Odyssey’ ranks as his fifth highest opening ever at the domestic box office, and his fifth film to cross the 100 million dollar mark, joining a list that includes ‘Twilight: New Moon’, both parts of ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn’, and ‘The Batman’.

Globally, the film’s momentum has been just as strong, with international markets pushing the worldwide opening weekend total to roughly 257.8 million dollars, the third highest global opening of the year behind only ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ and ‘Toy Story 5’. For Nolan personally, the domestic opening slots in as the third best of his career, trailing only ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’.

What Was The Biggest Reason You Watched Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’?

With reviews continuing to praise the film’s colossal ensemble work while still crediting Nolan’s direction as the driving creative force, the exit poll numbers simply confirm what the marketing campaign leaned into from the very beginning, that this was always sold as a Christopher Nolan film first and a star vehicle for any single actor second.
