Fans Were Worried About ‘1944,’ But Yellowstone’s New Prequel Just Received a Major Update
The Yellowstone universe is not slowing down. Even though the original series ended, Taylor Sheridan’s popular Western franchise continues to expand with new stories, and now fans have received a promising update about one long-awaited project.
The next possible chapter in the Dutton family history, titled 1944, has been stuck in development for years. The prequel was first announced alongside another planned Yellowstone spinoff, 2024, but since then, details about the project have been very limited. Many fans began wondering if the series had quietly been cancelled.
However, that does not appear to be the case. According to veteran TV journalist Matt Webb Mitovich, 1944 is still alive at Paramount.
In his Inside Line newsletter, Mitovich answered a fan question about the status of the show and said he was “assured” that the Yellowstone prequel “is still in development at Paramount.”
The update comes after several changes within the Yellowstone franchise. While earlier plans focused on different time periods, the newer spinoffs have moved more toward following specific characters. Shows like Marshals and Dutton Ranch have continued the story of familiar faces from the original series, including Kayce Dutton, Beth Dutton, and Rip Wheeler.
The earlier Yellowstone prequels, including 1883 and 1923, explored important moments in the Dutton family’s past. A potential 1944 series would continue that tradition by showing another generation of the family and revealing more about how the famous ranch became what it is today.
There are several possible directions the show could take. One popular theory is that 1944 could bring back Spencer Dutton, played by Brandon Sklenar in 1923. The timeline would also allow the series to explore the early life of John Dutton and introduce viewers to another chapter of the family’s history.
The project could also help expand the Yellowstone world in the same way 1923 introduced new characters and helped launch Sklenar into a bigger spotlight.
When 1944 was first announced, there were reports that the show could be connected to a planned modern-day spinoff called 2024. Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey was rumored to be attached to lead that project, but those plans appear to have changed. Instead, Paramount moved forward with separate character-focused shows.
Meanwhile, Taylor Sheridan remains one of the biggest creative forces behind Paramount’s television lineup. Although Sheridan signed a major deal with NBCUniversal to develop future movies and shows, he is expected to continue working with Paramount for several more years.
That means 1944 still has a chance to become a reality. While there is no release date, cast announcement, or production schedule yet, the latest report gives Yellowstone fans a reason to stay interested.
After years of waiting, the Dutton family’s next historical chapter may not be gone after all. It appears that 1944 is still being considered as another major piece of the Yellowstone legacy.
