Fetched: ‘Reacher,’ ‘Outer Banks’ and ‘Beauty in Black’ Lead as Nielsen Speeds Up Streaming Ratings Reports

Streaming viewership has always been something of a black box for casual viewers, with most platforms revealing only the numbers that make them look good. Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 charts have long served as one of the few independent windows into what’s actually pulling audiences in, even if that window came with a frustrating lag time.

That lag has just gotten significantly shorter. Nielsen confirmed it has overhauled its reporting process, cutting the delay on its streaming charts from four weeks down to just two, a change that finally gives the industry a much more current read on audience behavior.

To catch everyone up under the new system, Nielsen released three weeks of data at once, covering the stretch from August 17 through September 6. The results made clear which shows actually ruled the tail end of summer streaming: Prime Video’s ‘Reacher,’ along with Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks‘ and ‘Beauty in Black,’ traded blows at the top of the charts across those three weeks.

‘Reacher’ opened the stretch on top, with the Alan Ritchson-led action series pulling in 1.5 billion minutes during the week of August 17, fueled by the debut of its fourth season just days earlier on August 12. That kind of number is a reminder of just how much of a reliable heavy-hitter the show has become for Prime Video with each new season release.

The following week told a different story. ‘Reacher’ slipped slightly to 1.45 billion minutes, but two Netflix titles managed to leapfrog it entirely. ‘Outer Banks,’ which wrapped up its run with its fifth and final season on August 20, climbed from 1.46 billion to 1.49 billion minutes and took over the top spot, while Tyler Perry’s ‘Beauty in Black’ matched ‘Reacher’ step for step with its own 1.45 billion minutes.

That back-and-forth flipped again by the week of August 31, when ‘Reacher’ reclaimed the No. 1 position for the third time since its fourth season began, even as its viewership dipped further to 1.25 billion minutes. ‘Beauty in Black’ held on close behind with 1.06 billion minutes, though it actually landed at No. 3 on the overall chart that week, edged into the No. 2 slot by HBO Max’s ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ which scored 1.07 billion minutes of its own. ‘Outer Banks,’ meanwhile, fell sharply out of the conversation, sliding all the way down to No. 8 with 762 million minutes as interest in its final season began to cool.

This isn’t just a behind-the-scenes tweak for data nerds. In a statement explaining the shift, Nielsen senior vice president of product strategy and thought leadership Brian Fuhrer described the change as potentially the most significant enhancement to the company’s streaming measurement since the ratings system first launched back in 2017. He added that as the pace of change across the media landscape keeps accelerating, giving clients more immediate, up-to-date audience data helps them keep pace with how consumers are actually behaving.

That immediacy matters for an industry that increasingly leans on early viewership signals to make fast calls on renewals, marketing budgets, and where to point promotional dollars next. A month-old snapshot of audience behavior is far less useful than one that’s only two weeks stale, especially in a landscape where shows can rise and fall in popularity within a matter of days.

The same data drop also revealed some other notable movement elsewhere on the charts. HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ finally cracked Nielsen’s acquired programming chart during the week of August 31, following its August 16 launch, landing at No. 8 with 500 million minutes watched. Netflix’s ‘The Gentlemen’ also made noise after its second season dropped on September 3, pulling in 722 million minutes and claiming the No. 7 spot among streaming originals for the week.

Taken together, the three-week data dump paints a picture of a streaming landscape where dominance is anything but guaranteed week to week, even for established hits. ‘Reacher,’ ‘Outer Banks,’ and ‘Beauty in Black’ all proved capable of topping the charts during this stretch, but none of them managed to hold the crown for more than a single week at a time.

Which of these shows would you crown the streaming hit of the summer?
