Box office watchers have spent the past two days glued to hourly updates, watching Tom Holland’s latest outing as Peter Parker rewrite the record books almost in real time. What started as an already-historic Thursday preview number has spiraled into a full-blown chase for the biggest opening weekend of all time.

That chase has only intensified as Saturday numbers rolled in. With Friday’s record-breaking $168 million already locked in, industry trackers have spent the weekend recalculating exactly how close ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ can get to unseating the box office’s most untouchable benchmark.

The latest tally puts Saturday’s haul at $99 million, pushing the film’s domestic cume north of $267 million with one day still left to count. That Saturday number has left the weekend record chase genuinely uncertain, with the final outcome now depending heavily on how Sunday’s actuals get reported by Sony.

According to Deadline, Sony’s own official estimate has the three-day weekend landing at $325 million, itself a stellar second-best opening in North American history behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ all-time record of $357.1 million. Other trackers, however, believe the real number could climb as high as $350 million or beyond, keeping the door open for a genuine shot at the record.

That record chase comes down to a remarkably tight margin. Deadline reported that if ‘Brand New Day’ clears $105 million on Sunday, its odds of actually surpassing ‘Endgame’s’ opening weekend improve considerably, framing the entire outcome as potentially hinging on a swing of just a few million dollars either way.

The film’s Friday performance alone already reset one major record outright. That $168 million single-day total, which included the previously record-breaking $72 million in Thursday previews, comfortably beat ‘Endgame’s’ previous first-day mark of $157.4 million, even though the two films’ preview windows weren’t structured identically.

Context helps explain some of that gap. ‘Brand New Day’s’ preview screenings started at noon Thursday, with early access for Prime Video subscribers even earlier on Wednesday, while ‘Endgame’s’ previews didn’t begin until 6 p.m. That extra runway gave ‘Brand New Day’ more screening hours to build its total, even if the comparison isn’t perfectly apples-to-apples.

Beyond the Spider-Man-specific numbers, this weekend is shaping up to be a landmark moment for the entire North American box office. With ‘The Odyssey’ still holding strong in its third weekend at roughly $51 million, the industry-wide weekend total is now projected to reach $434 million, which would surpass the $402 million posted during ‘Endgame’s’ original 2019 opening weekend and mark the single biggest weekend in U.S. box office history.

Pre-release projections for ‘Brand New Day’ had ranged anywhere from $180 million by cautious trade estimates to $250 million from more bullish box office prognosticators, meaning the film has already blown past even its most optimistic forecasts. Whatever Sunday’s final numbers show, the film has already secured its place among the biggest openings in movie history.
