First Trailer Drops for Netflix’s Michael Jackson Trial Documentary Series as Release Date Is Revealed
Netflix is preparing to release a new three-part documentary series focused on the 2005 trial of Michael Jackson. The series, titled Michael Jackson: The Verdict, is set to premiere on June 3 and revisits one of the most closely watched celebrity court cases in modern history.
The documentary looks back at the 2003 child molestation charges against the pop star, the highly publicized trial that followed, and the intense media attention surrounding the courtroom proceedings. It also examines the case from both the prosecution and defense perspectives, featuring people who were directly involved, including jurors, witnesses, accusers, and members of Jackson’s legal team.
According to the filmmakers, as reported by Netflix’s Tudum, the goal was to revisit the case in a more structured and factual way. They said, “It has been 20 years since the trial of Michael Jackson in which he was found not guilty. Yet, to this day, controversy still rages. No cameras were allowed in court, and so the public’s view of the facts at the time were filtered by commentators and presented piecemeal. It was time to take a forensic look at the trial as a whole.”
They also explained their intention to present firsthand accounts from people who were present during the trial. “The aim was to take the audience inside the proceedings and only speak to eyewitnesses who played a part in those events,” the filmmakers said. They added that the series was designed to give viewers a clearer understanding of what actually happened inside the courtroom.
The project is directed by Nick Green and executive produced by Fiona Stourton. It is created by showrunner David Herman and also executive produced by James Goldston and Stourton. Production is handled by Candle True Stories.
The series covers Jackson’s 2003 arrest and the accusations of child molestation that led to the 2005 trial. It also explores how the case became a global media event, with news coverage shaping much of the public perception at the time. Jackson was ultimately acquitted of all charges, but the case has remained a topic of discussion long after his death in 2009.
With the release of Michael Jackson: The Verdict, Netflix aims to revisit the trial in a more detailed and grounded format, focusing on courtroom testimony and those who witnessed the proceedings firsthand.
