First Trailer for ‘Christy’ Shows Sydney Sweeney’s Intense Boxing Transformation
The first trailer for Christy, a new biographical sports drama, has been released, giving fans a first look at Sydney Sweeney as boxing legend Christy Martin.
The film tells the story of Martin’s rise as one of the most famous female boxers in America during the 1990s and her struggle after her husband attempted to kill her in 2010.

Directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, the movie follows Martin’s journey in a male-dominated sport and the personal challenges she faced outside the ring. Sydney Sweeney takes on the lead role, while Ben Foster plays her coach-turned-abusive husband James V. Martin.
Merritt Wever appears as Martin’s mother, Joyce Salters, and Katy O’Brian plays her rival boxer, Lisa Holewyne. Other cast members include Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, and Chad L. Coleman as prominent figures in Martin’s life and career.
Production on Christy started in North Carolina in September 2024 and wrapped in November of the same year. Christy Martin herself was involved in the making of the film, and Antony Partos composed the score.
The film was produced by a team including David Michôd, Sydney Sweeney, and Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, alongside several executive producers. Production companies involved include Anonymous Content, Yoki, Inc., Votiv, Fifty-Fifty Films, and Black Bear Pictures.
Christy had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, in the Special Presentations section. Black Bear Pictures will release the movie in theaters across the U.S. on November 7.
Early reviews have been mixed. Rotten Tomatoes shows 61% positive ratings from critics, while Metacritic assigns a score of 57 out of 100, indicating “mixed or average” reviews.
The newly released trailer highlights Sweeney’s transformation into the boxing star, showing her intense training and in-ring action. The film is shaping up to be both a sports drama and a personal story about resilience and survival.
