Marvel’s streaming era has been a mixed bag. Some shows have sparked big conversations, while others have struggled to hold onto audiences who feel they need years of homework to keep up.

Marvel Television is now preparing a reset. After the current slate wraps, the studio’s live-action output is set to go quiet, and the series chosen to restart the engine is a spy thriller called ‘Zodiac‘.

A new report suggests the show is being designed with newcomers in mind. ‘Zodiac’ will reportedly serve as a “jumping-on point” for new fans after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, according to TheWrap, which cited a Marvel TV insider.

The report says the series will be made with a more modest budget than Marvel’s recent star-driven shows. That includes room for familiar MCU characters and actors to appear in supporting roles, which could give longtime fans a few recognizable faces without making the story depend on them.

The cheaper budget is also meant to help the show’s long-term prospects. There is reportedly hope that ‘Zodiac’ can continue past season 1, which has been a challenge for Marvel’s live-action streaming series.

The insider’s description matters because it frames the show as an entry point rather than another chapter in a sprawling saga. Newcomers would get a satisfying story without needing to catch up on everything that came before.

Marvel revealed the series at the Marvel Television and Marvel Animation panel at New York Comic Con on Oct. 8. Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise, announced that it is a live-action spy thriller coming to Disney+ in 2028.

So far, the confirmed details are limited to the title, the genre, the platform, the 2028 window and the London shoot, which begins in spring 2027. There is no confirmed cast, plot, episode count or release date.

It is the first new live-action Marvel series announced since ‘Ironheart’, which premiered last year. Marvel has reportedly brought on Israeli writing partners Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem to develop the show, according to a Deadline report, and Leshem is behind the original ‘Euphoria’.

Marvel Television Is Reportedly Hitting Pause, and ‘Zodiac’ Is Waiting on the Other Side

The same report says Marvel Television’s live-action shows will go on hiatus after ‘VisionQuest’ and season 3 of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. ‘VisionQuest’ wraps its run on Nov. 10, and the break lasts until after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which hits theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.

That would make ‘Zodiac’ the first live-action Marvel series of the post-‘Secret Wars’ era. Marvel Television is now overseen by Winderbaum and is described as less connected to the films than before.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is ending with season 3, which brings the cast of ‘The Defenders’ back to join Charlie Cox for the final run.

One source also said Marvel Television always has between 3 and 5 live-action shows in development at a given time. The pause fits a broader recalibration toward quality over quantity.

Fans have already started guessing how ‘Zodiac’ fits into the wider MCU. Some have wondered about a connection to S.H.I.E.L.D., since one of the letters in the logo resembles the symbol of the spy agency.

Speculation grew after Clark Gregg, who played Phil Coulson, posted a story on Instagram about the announcement. None of that is confirmed, and Marvel hasn’t discussed any links.

In the comics, Zodiac is a criminal cartel inspired by astrological signs, with ties to S.H.I.E.L.D. Whether the show borrows that idea is unknown.

If the report is accurate, ‘Zodiac’ represents a deliberate shift. Instead of a big-budget crossover show built to connect everything, Marvel is aiming for a smaller, more self-contained series that welcomes anyone.

That approach could pay off, especially after ‘Secret Wars’ resets the playing field. Whether a leaner series can win over newcomers is the question that will define Marvel TV’s next chapter.

Do you think Marvel's 'Zodiac' can become the perfect starting point for new MCU fans?
