Francis Ford Coppola is a brand name when it comes to Hollywood and the film industry in general. Despite some recent flops, he is a giant who has brought us timeless classics such as The Godfather trilogy, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now.

In recent years, though, he has been struggling, and his most recent outing, the political satire Megalopolis, flopped in a major way. And while Coppola is adamant about defending his movie, Megalopolis is really below the great director’s capabilities.

But, as you know, Coppola is not giving up and is planning to make two more movies. At the same time, he is giving interviews, and in a recent one, he criticized Trump’s planned movie tariffs.

As you probably know, President Donald Trump has been in a state of tariff frenzy in recent weeks and months, creating a problem on the global market whose repercussions we are yet to face.

And while his tariffs have or will hit several industries, probably very hard, the movie industry has been more or less exempt from that. Until now. As you know, President Trump recently announced some unbelievable tariffs on non-U.S.-made films, which shocked the industry as a whole.

And while this is still just an idea, many filmmakers have spoken against it, believing that it would be a significant blow for the industry as a whole. Among those critical is Coppola.

No one I know thinks that this tariff philosophy— All it does is create uncertainty. People don’t understand that the economy in the previous administration? There was world inflation, there wasn’t [just] inflation in America,” he said in a recent interview.

“The entire world was going through a serious inflationary trend. But the country that did the best with it—and which other countries were jealous of—was the United States. So, the United States really banked a lot of money previous to this new administration, and there’s a lot of money in the country, and these tariffs are like slamming the door closed on what was a very prosperous situation,” he ultimately concluded.

As said, it is unclear how and when, of even if, Trump plans on introducing movie tariffs, but it is certain that the industry will be facing numerous issues and that tariffs are not the right way to go when the movie industry is concerned.
