‘Full House’ Star Shares Update in Ongoing Cancer Battle
Dave Coulier is sharing hopeful news after a long and difficult health battle. The Full House star says he is now in remission following treatment for tongue cancer.
Coulier, who is 66, revealed the update during an interview on Good Morning America. He told host Robin Roberts that both of his cancer diagnoses are currently under control. It’s been a roller coaster ride for sure, he said. I’m in remission with both cancers. And what a journey this has been.
According to Coulier, doctors found the tongue cancer during a routine check-up and PET scan. They noticed an issue at the base of his tongue and later diagnosed him with P16 squamous carcinoma, a form of head and neck cancer. He explained that doctors confirmed this cancer was not connected to his earlier illness. Nearly a year before this diagnosis, Coulier had already gone through treatment for Stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
When he first spoke publicly about the tongue cancer in December, Coulier said doctors were optimistic. He shared that the cancer had a 90% curability rate and that his outlook was much better than during his lymphoma treatment. He went on to complete 35 rounds of radiation, finishing treatment on December 31.
Even with the good news, Coulier said the experience has changed how he looks at life and health. Even though I’m in remission, I feel like cancer is always in the rearview mirror, he said during the interview. He added that he now feels a responsibility to speak up and encourage people to take their health seriously. I never wanted to be the poster boy for cancer, he said. But now I feel like I can encourage people to get prostate exams and mammograms. Talk to your doctors.
Coulier also spoke about the support system that helped him get through treatment. He credited his wife, Melissa Bring, for standing by him every step of the way. He also shared a lighthearted story about his longtime friend and Full House co-star John Stamos, who visited him during recovery. He’s my brother, Coulier said. He wore a bald cap and when he came around the corner dressed like that, I dropped to the floor laughing.
The visit took an unexpected turn when Stamos caught COVID, forcing the two friends to isolate. Coulier joked about the situation, saying, We were like two fifth graders sitting in the hallway, talking to each other with walkie talkies. We’re very mature.
Coulier’s update was shared on Good Morning America and has since brought relief and encouragement to fans who have followed his health journey closely.
