George Lucas Joins Cast of ‘Minions & Monsters’ in Surprise New Role
Illumination is preparing a new animated film called Minions & Monsters, and it is already getting attention ahead of its release. The information comes from reporting around the Annecy Film Festival in France, along with comments from Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri in interviews given during his Hollywood Walk of Fame appearance.
Meledandri recently spoke about the studio’s success and joked about how people might not recognize his name in the future. He said, “In years to come, as people walk down Hollywood Boulevard, they’ll come across my star. And unless they’re related to me, they’ll ask: ‘Who the hell was that guy?’” Despite that comment, Illumination has become one of the most successful animation companies in Hollywood.
Since its first film Despicable Me in 2010, Illumination has earned more than 11 billion dollars worldwide. The studio is known for its Minions characters, which have become global pop culture figures. According to industry reporting, the Minions act as the studio’s biggest brand identity and are a major reason for its box office strength.
Minions & Monsters is the latest project in the franchise. It will premiere at the Annecy Film Festival and is set for a July 1 theatrical release. The film continues the Minions storyline and places the characters in a new setting inspired by old Hollywood filmmaking.
The story takes place in the 1920s during the silent film era. In this version of the story, the Minions become filmmakers themselves. The idea is to show them trying to create movies while also causing chaos along the way. The film includes references to classic silent cinema, including the style of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd.
The film is directed by Pierre Coffin, who has worked on many previous Minions and Despicable Me projects. According to production interviews, Coffin was originally unsure about returning, but the idea of the Minions making movies convinced him. He said, “He got me at ‘Minions making movies.’ From that moment, I just had questions.”
The voice cast includes Jeff Bridges as a studio head, along with other returning creative elements from the franchise. One of the unusual details reported in the film’s production is that George Lucas is also part of the cast, which has drawn additional attention from fans and media coverage.
Chris Meledandri has built Illumination into a global animation powerhouse by focusing on simple storytelling and comedy aimed at wide audiences. In interviews, he has explained that the studio was never trying to compete directly with Disney or Pixar in tone or style. Instead, Illumination focuses on light, fast-paced, and highly commercial entertainment.
He has also emphasized that controlling production costs is a key part of the studio’s success. Minions & Monsters reportedly has a budget of around 85 million dollars, which is lower than many other major animated films. Meledandri has said that keeping budgets under control helps ensure the films remain profitable.
According to reporting from the Annecy Film Festival coverage, the new movie is expected to continue Illumination’s strong box office performance. The studio’s recent success includes multiple billion-dollar films, including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Minions & Monsters is also part of Illumination’s growing global expansion, with production teams working across the United States, France, and other international locations. The studio continues to focus on building stories that can work for audiences around the world while keeping the Minions at the center of its identity.
