‘Gotham’ Star David Mazouz Reveals He Still Wants One Specific Role in the DCU, and We Love It

Nearly seven years have passed since ‘Gotham’ wrapped its five-season run, and the actor who spent his adolescence playing a young Bruce Wayne has never quite left the Batman mythology behind. David Mazouz built a loyal fanbase during his time on the Fox drama, portraying Bruce from the immediate aftermath of his parents’ murder all the way through his transformation into a masked vigilante.

Since the show ended, Mazouz has moved on to theater, film and producing work, even graduating from Stanford in 2023. But his connection to Gotham City’s most famous family has clearly stuck with him, and it turns out he’s been eyeing a very specific spot in James Gunn’s rebuilt DC Universe.

That interest resurfaced in a new interview with Love It Film, where Mazouz was asked about a possible return to the Batman world, this time on the other side of the family tree. “I would love to be a member of the bat family,” Mazouz said, expressing his desire to play Damian Wayne, the current incarnation of Robin, in Gunn’s DCU.

It’s not the first time Mazouz has made his interest in the role known. Back in 2017, while still starring as a teenage Bruce on ‘Gotham,’ Mazouz shared fan art imagining him as Damian Wayne and wrote, “I mean if DCEU is casting…,” launching the hashtag #davidfordamian and asking fans to help promote the idea. Damian, introduced in DC canon in 1987’s ‘Batman: Son of the Demon’ and properly folded into continuity in 2006, is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, raised by the League of Assassins before eventually becoming the fifth Robin.

The timing of Mazouz’s renewed comments lines up with real momentum building around the character in Gunn’s DCU. Gunn announced a Batman and Robin film titled ‘The Brave and the Bold’ at DC’s Burbank event in January 2023, describing it as a father-son story centered on Bruce Wayne and Damian Wayne, and noting that Damian is his personal favorite version of Robin. According to Gunn, the film will be loosely inspired by Grant Morrison’s 2006 to 2013 Batman comic run and will mark the start of the Bat family within his new DCU.

Fans and outlets have floated plenty of names for who could eventually don Damian’s cape, and Mazouz’s history with the role keeps putting him back in that conversation. His prior experience playing a young, tortured version of Bruce Wayne on ‘Gotham’ has repeatedly been cited as evidence that he already has the range for a character defined by inner conflict and simmering intensity.

Whether Gunn and his team ever seriously consider Mazouz for the part remains to be seen, especially with ‘The Brave and the Bold’ still in early development and no cast attached. Still, for an actor who has spent years publicly campaigning for one more shot at the Batman universe, this latest comment makes clear the interest hasn’t faded a bit.

Should David Mazouz Play Damian Wayne in the DCU?
