GTA 6’s Release Day Could Cost the US Economy Nearly $1 Billion

Video game launches rarely make waves beyond gaming circles, but Rockstar’s long-awaited sequel has become such a cultural phenomenon that economists are now weighing in on its potential impact on the American workforce. Few entertainment releases in recent memory have generated enough anticipation to warrant this kind of academic attention.

That anticipation reached a new level following the recent Netflix showcase of extended gameplay footage, which reignited conversation around just how disruptive the game’s actual launch day might become for employers across the country. With the release date now locked in for later this year, that speculation has turned into something closer to a formal economic projection.

That projection paints a striking picture. An estimated 1.5 million Americans are expected to take the day off work to play GTA 6 on release day, a disruption that could cost the US economy close to $1 billion, according to economist José García Montalvo of Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.

Montalvo’s analysis, which was first reported by Spanish outlet El Output before spreading widely through gaming and mainstream business media, calculates the projected loss using a straightforward formula: multiplying the roughly 1.5 million expected absences by the average annual contribution of a US worker to gross domestic product, estimated at around $70,000. That math suggests the single day of workforce disruption could trim approximately 2% off national productivity.

The study specifically identifies young men between the ages of 18 and 30 as the demographic most likely to skip work or school for the launch, with some versions of the analysis extending that range up to age 35. Industries with a high proportion of remote or tech-focused positions are expected to feel the greatest impact, since employees working from home face far less friction when deciding to quietly spend the day gaming instead of working.

That pattern isn’t without precedent. When ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ launched back in September 2013, surveys found that around 6% of workers between 18 and 35 in major cities like New York and Los Angeles skipped work entirely on the game’s release day, giving Montalvo’s team a real historical baseline to build their current estimate around.

It’s worth noting that Montalvo’s figure represents an academic estimate rather than an official government forecast, and no full public methodology behind the calculation has been published. Still, the projection has gained significant traction across gaming and business media given the sheer scale of anticipation surrounding the game’s release.

Interestingly, the estimated $1 billion hit to US productivity closely mirrors the financial targets publisher Take-Two Interactive has set for the game’s own launch performance. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously indicated the company expects launch-window sales and initial operations to generate roughly $1 billion in direct cash flow, meaning the economic loss and the economic gain from the same single day could land at nearly identical figures.

Industry analysts project total first-week retail bookings for GTA 6 could reach as high as $4.5 billion globally, with analytics firm Newzoo estimating the game could sell at least 37 million copies during that same launch week. Since lead developer Rockstar North is based in Edinburgh, Scotland, much of that international revenue flow would ultimately benefit the UK rather than staying within the US economy, even as American workplaces absorb the temporary productivity hit.

GTA 6 is currently scheduled to launch November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. With anticipation continuing to build and businesses already bracing for potential staffing disruptions, the game’s release day looks set to be as much an economic talking point as a cultural one.

Would you take the day off work for GTA 6 on release day?
