Apple TV+’s new horror-comedy series is getting major attention after filmmaker Guillermo del Toro shared a glowing reaction to the show.

Del Toro, known for his work in horror and fantasy films like “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Shape of Water,” “Crimson Peak,” and “Hellboy,” is no stranger to the genre. He has also worked in television on projects like “The Strain” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities,” making his opinion especially notable for fans of horror storytelling.

In his post, del Toro praised ‘Widow’s Bay’ in very strong terms. He wrote, “If I may- in my estimation- #WidowsBay may very well be the best streaming series in a long time… and hands down one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in Horror.” The comment quickly spread online as viewers and critics reacted to his praise.

“Widow’s Bay” is a 10-episode series set in a small New England town that tries to turn itself into a tourist destination. The story follows Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, who pushes for change despite local legends that the island is haunted. At first, the mayor dismisses the rumors, but strange events begin to happen around town, slowly changing his mind about what is real.

As the supernatural activity grows, Tom is joined by a small group of locals who start investigating what is happening. This includes his assistant Patricia, played by Kate O’Flynn, and an older resident named Wyck, played by Stephen Root. Together, they try to figure out whether the town is truly haunted or if something else is going on.

The show also features Tom’s son Evan, played by Kingston Rumi Southwick, along with Sheriff Bechir Clemmons, Reverend Bryce, and other town residents who each respond differently to the strange events. The mix of characters helps build both the mystery and the comedy of the series.

“Widow’s Bay” has received strong reviews from critics and audiences. It holds a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics pointing out its balance of suspense and humor. One review described it as a series that understands “the careful relationship between suspense and comedy,” comparing its tone to other modern genre shows.

The series was created by Katie Dippold, known for her work in comedy television, and several episodes are directed by Hiro Murai, who has also worked on acclaimed series such as “Atlanta” and “The Bear.” Their combined experience helps shape the show’s unusual blend of horror and comedy.

“Widow’s Bay” is also performing well in streaming rankings on Apple TV+, where it has appeared near the top of the platform’s most-watched lists. With several episodes still to be released, interest in the series continues to grow.

Now streaming on Apple TV+, “Widow’s Bay” is gaining attention not just from viewers, but also from major filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, whose praise has added even more buzz to the series.
