‘Harry Potter’ Series to Recast Major Character Ahead of Season 2 Due to “Unforeseen Circumstances”
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series is facing an early casting change ahead of its second season.
Young actress Gracie Cochrane, who plays Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will not be returning for Season 2, according to a statement shared by Cochrane and her family.
The announcement was made as Season 1 of the series is nearing the end of production. In their statement, Cochrane’s family explained that she has decided to step away from the role due to unexpected circumstances. They also shared that the experience of being part of the Harry Potter world was very meaningful for her.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one,” the family said. They added that her time on the project had been “truly wonderful” and thanked the casting director Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for the opportunity. They also noted that Cochrane is looking forward to future roles and new opportunities.
HBO also responded to the news, confirming the departure and showing support for the young actress. “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show,” the network said in its statement.
The series itself is a major new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books and was recently renewed for a second season. Production on Season 2 is expected to begin later this year.
Ginny Weasley is one of the key characters in the story, especially as the plot develops, which makes the recasting an important change for the series moving forward. The role will now need to be filled by a new actor when Season 2 begins filming.
The show is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod serving as executive producer and director on multiple episodes. It is produced by HBO in collaboration with Brontë Film and TV, Heyday Films, and Warner Bros. Television. The series will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max once released.
