John Lithgow has added another major achievement to his long career. The veteran actor won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in “Giant,” and the victory has put him in the record books.

According to reports from the Tony Awards, Lithgow is now the oldest man ever to win a competitive acting Tony Award. At 80 years old, he passed the previous record held by Roy Dotrice, who was 77 when he won for “A Moon for the Misbegotten” in 2000.

The win is impressive for more than one reason. It also gave Lithgow a new Tony Awards record that had never been achieved before. His first acting Tony Award came in 1973 for his role in “The Changing Room.” With his latest victory arriving 53 years later, he now holds the record for the longest gap between competitive acting Tony wins.

The previous record belonged to actress Angela Lansbury, whose Tony victories were separated by 43 years. Lithgow’s 53-year gap moves him well ahead of that mark.

His latest award came for his role in “Giant,” a play that focuses on author Roald Dahl and the controversy surrounding his antisemitic views. The performance earned strong praise from critics and theater audiences throughout its run.

During his acceptance speech, Lithgow reflected on his career and the unexpected connection between his first and latest Tony-winning performances.

“I’m such a lucky actor. This is my third Tony Award. My first one was 53 years ago at my Broadway debut in the American premiere of an English play, which by an amazing coincidence originated at London’s Royal Court Theatre, just like ‘Giant.’”

He continued by talking about the long journey between those two victories.

“Two Tony bookends with 53 years between them. In those years, I have worked with hundreds of just fantastic theatre artists. I’ve had dozens and dozens of ecstatic moments on the stage, but I have to tell you right now, this moment has got to be one of the best.”

The win marks the third Tony Award of Lithgow’s career. He previously won for “The Changing Room” in 1973 and for “Sweet Smell of Success” in 2002.

The latest victory also places him in a very exclusive group. According to Tony Awards records, Lithgow is now one of only four performers to win acting Tony Awards in three different performance categories. The others are Kevin Kline, Boyd Gaines, and Audra McDonald. McDonald remains the only performer to win in four acting categories.

Lithgow’s win came against a strong field of nominees that included Nathan Lane, Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Strong, and Will Harrison. Despite the competition, the longtime actor walked away with one of the biggest moments of the night.

After more than five decades on stage, screen, and television, Lithgow continues to prove that age is no barrier to success. With a historic Tony Award now added to his résumé, the actor has once again shown why he remains one of the most respected performers in the entertainment industry.
