Hayden Panettiere spoke openly about some of the darkest moments of her early Hollywood career months before her death, including a disturbing encounter she said happened when she was only 18.

The actress detailed the experience in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which was published in May 2026. The book covers her childhood in the entertainment industry, addiction, depression, trauma, and other painful experiences from her life. Her publisher describes the memoir as a candid account of what she went through while growing up in the public eye.

One of the most troubling stories involved a trip on a yacht in the South of France. Panettiere said she was spending time with a group of people when a woman she trusted took her downstairs to a private cabin.

According to Panettiere’s account, the woman was someone she had come to see as a close friend and protector. Instead, she said the woman led her into a small room where a famous British singer-songwriter was lying in bed.

Panettiere said the man was shirtless and covered by a sheet. She had not been told beforehand what was going to happen, leaving her shocked and confused.

In a May 2026 appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Panettiere recalled the moment and said, “It was… that moment shook me. Was shocking.” She explained that she had been enjoying herself before the incident and had no warning that the night would take such a disturbing turn.

She said her survival instinct quickly took over. “That lion in me, that fire in me. My hair stood on end and I became ferocious. This is not happening,” Panettiere said during the interview.

She then left the room and tried to hide elsewhere on the boat. Because the yacht was at sea, she said there was nowhere she could simply go to escape.

The actress also focused on the betrayal she felt. She had trusted the woman who brought her there and believed she was someone who would protect her.

“It was led by somebody that I had grown to trust, see as a protector. Somebody who had my back,” Panettiere said.

The memoir gives additional details about the unnamed man, describing him as a famous British singer-songwriter in his thirties. Panettiere chose not to publicly identify him. Entertainment Weekly reported that she made the decision in part because of concerns about legal and professional consequences.

The incident was one of several difficult experiences Panettiere described from her teenage years in Hollywood. She began working as a performer before she was one year old and later became widely known for Heroes and Nashville. Her memoir looks back at how growing up famous affected her and how she dealt with trauma, addiction and mental health struggles.

Panettiere died at age 36 on August 16, 2026, after she was found unresponsive in her South Carolina home. Authorities are still investigating her death. The Associated Press reported that officials had not found signs of foul play, while the cause of death had not yet been determined.

In the months before her death, Panettiere continued speaking publicly about her past and the difficult experiences she had survived. Her memoir became an important part of that effort, allowing her to tell her story in her own words and reflect on the trauma she carried from her years as a young star.
