Hayley Atwell Confirms Peggy Carter Is Officially Back in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and She’s Not the Peggy You Remember
Marvel Studios has spent years teasing the idea that Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s love story was truly finished, closing out that chapter with one of the most emotional send-offs in the franchise’s history. That ending felt permanent enough that few fans expected to see Peggy Carter return to the fold in any meaningful way, especially once Chris Evans had seemingly hung up his shield for good.
That assumption came crashing down at this year’s Comic-Con, where Marvel used its Hall H panel to reveal one surprise return after another for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Amid a parade of familiar faces stepping back into the spotlight, one confirmation in particular sent longtime fans of the franchise’s earliest films into a frenzy.
Hayley Atwell is officially returning as Peggy Carter, with Marvel confirming her involvement directly during the panel. Speaking with Variety afterward, Atwell reflected on what it means to bring the character back into a story of this scale, explaining that while spectacle can be impressive and exciting, it cannot replace human connection, and that keeping audiences emotionally invested in the characters at the center of the story is what allows everything else to become a backdrop to the people being watched.
She pointed specifically to Steve and Peggy’s relationship as something fans have connected with because it feels grounded in something real.
Atwell expanded on that idea in a separate conversation, explaining that every time she has returned to the role, she has wanted Peggy to have something new to do, something that shows the character has evolved rather than simply reappearing for nostalgia’s sake. She described ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as an existential epic, adding that audiences will see Peggy responding to that scale of stakes in a very different light than fans have seen before.
That description has only fueled speculation about which version of Peggy Carter is actually returning for the film. Atwell has played multiple iterations of the character across her time in the MCU, including the original wartime Agent Carter from ‘Captain America, The First Avenger,’ an aged Peggy seen briefly in ‘The Winter Soldier,’ and Captain Carter, a super soldier variant introduced through the animated series ‘What If’ before appearing in live action in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ where that version of the character was ultimately killed by the Scarlet Witch.
Atwell has remained tight-lipped about exactly how her character fits into the larger story, admitting in her conversation with DiscussingFilm that she has not yet seen the finished film herself, which makes it difficult for her to say much about how everything comes together narratively. She did speak warmly about reuniting with Chris Evans, describing their long history together dating back to when both of their careers were just beginning.
Atwell’s confirmed return joins a growing list of surprise appearances revealed during Marvel’s Hall H panel, part of what has been described as one of the studio’s largest and most heavily attended presentations in recent memory. The panel reportedly featured over seventy stars gathered to promote the film, alongside new footage previewing the sprawling, multiverse-spanning story.
Which version of Peggy Carter do you think we'll see in 'Avengers: Doomsday'?
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to bring together heroes from across the MCU, the X-Men films, and the Fantastic Four, Peggy Carter’s return adds yet another emotional thread to a story already carrying enormous narrative weight. Given how much history the character carries with Steve Rogers, her presence alone suggests the film’s most personal stakes may end up mattering just as much as its cosmic ones.
