The upcoming Lanterns series has officially locked in its release date, with HBO and DC Studios confirming that the show will premiere on August 16. The update comes after early promotional material briefly disappeared from official social media accounts before returning with the new date added.

The announcement was shared through HBO and DC Studios’ official platforms, which also restored the series trailer after the brief removal.

The show is part of the new DC Universe being built under James Gunn’s leadership and continues the studio’s push into connected storytelling across TV and film.

Lanterns follows two Green Lantern characters working together on Earth. Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, a veteran member of the Green Lantern Corps, while Aaron Pierre takes on the role of John Stewart, who is being introduced into the Corps under Jordan’s guidance.

The story centers on the two investigating a murder case in Nebraska, mixing superhero elements with a crime-focused mystery tone.

This series will be the third live-action project in the new DC Universe lineup, following the animated series Creature Commandos and the second season of Peacemaker. It will also be the first DC Studios series to air directly on HBO’s cable network.

The Green Lantern project has gone through a long development process over the years. Earlier versions were planned under producer Greg Berlanti but were later reworked and replaced as DC Studios reset its shared universe direction.

The first season will run for eight episodes. A second season has not been officially confirmed yet, but the structure leaves room for continuation depending on how the show performs.

The series is also expected to connect with future DC films. Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart will appear in the upcoming movie Superman: Man of Tomorrow, where he will share the screen with David Corenswet as Superman. He is also set to appear alongside Nathan Fillion, who plays Guy Gardner in the same universe.

DC Studios is also building a wider slate of releases around the same time, including films like Supergirl and Clayface, showing how the studio is expanding its shared universe across both movies and television.

Overall, Lanterns is shaping up to be a key part of the DCU’s early phase, especially as it tries to connect characters and stories more tightly than previous versions of the franchise.

This is one of the more interesting DC projects because it mixes superhero action with a detective-style story. That could help it stand out if it is done well. What do you think about this darker, mystery-focused direction for Green Lantern? Share your thoughts in the comments.
