HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Finally Found Its Colin Creevey, and Book Fans Are Thrilled

Some Hogwarts characters never got the screen time book readers felt they deserved, disappearing from the film series almost as quickly as they arrived despite playing much larger roles across J.K. Rowling’s original novels. One of those overlooked characters has finally found new life in HBO’s ongoing television adaptation.

That character is Colin Creevey, the camera-toting, Harry-obsessed Gryffindor first introduced in ‘Chamber of Secrets,’ whose casting search began back in June as HBO’s ‘Harry Potter‘ series prepared to move into production on its second season. Casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann had been holding auditions for months, with reports of recall rounds signaling just how seriously the production was treating the role.

That search has now come to an end. Jasper Ambrose has been cast as Colin Creevey for Season 2 of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter,’ filling one of the more anticipated remaining roles as the show continues building out its adaptation of ‘Chamber of Secrets.’ The casting arrives alongside a wave of other Season 2 announcements, reflecting just how quickly the production has been locking down its expanded ensemble in recent weeks.

Colin Creevey’s history with the franchise makes his casting particularly significant for longtime book readers. Actor Hugh Mitchell played the character in the original 2002 film adaptation of ‘Chamber of Secrets,’ but Creevey was written out of the movie series entirely after that single appearance, despite remaining a recurring presence across the rest of Rowling’s novels.

In the books, Creevey continues showing up well beyond his introduction, unwittingly feeding information to journalist Rita Skeeter during ‘Goblet of Fire’ and later fighting alongside Dumbledore’s Army against Dolores Umbridge’s regime. His story ultimately ends during the Battle of Hogwarts, where he’s killed by Death Eaters after sneaking back into the castle despite being banned under Voldemort’s Muggle-born expulsion laws.

HBO’s decision to properly cast and develop Creevey for the series reflects the broader promise behind the show’s approach, which treats each of Rowling’s seven novels as a dedicated season rather than compressing the story into a handful of feature films. That structure gives the production considerably more room to explore characters the original movies simply didn’t have time for.

Ambrose’s casting arrives amid a broader wave of Season 2 announcements, following recent additions like Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley and Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle. The season has also dealt with its share of behind-the-scenes shakeups, including the recasting of Ginny Weasley after original Season 1 actress Gracie Cochrane departed the production, with her family releasing a statement calling her time in the franchise “truly wonderful.”
