‘Heated Rivalry’ Season 2 Adds New Castmate Ahead of Its Next Chapter on the Ice

‘Heated Rivalry‘ arrived with almost no fanfare back in November 2025, yet the Canadian hockey romance quickly became one of the most talked-about word-of-mouth hits in recent streaming memory. Built around the forbidden relationship between two closeted professional hockey players, the series climbed to the top of HBO Max’s charts and turned its two leads into breakout stars almost overnight.

That success led to an unusually quick renewal, with Crave and HBO Max confirming a second season not long after the first had even finished its run. Season 2 is set to adapt Rachel Reid’s novel ‘The Long Game,’ the follow-up book in her ‘Game Changers’ series, expanding the world of Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov’s story with a wave of new characters joining the cast.

That expanding roster just grew again. According to a new casting announcement, Brendan Morgan has joined the series as Zane Boodram, adding another face to the growing ensemble as production on the sophomore season continues to take shape.

Boodram is known within the world of the books as the alternate captain of the Ottawa Centaurs, a character recognized for hosting team barbecue nights, giving him a grounded, community-minded presence within the hockey world the show has built. His addition continues a broader pattern of Season 2 bringing in new players and storylines that extend beyond the central romance that anchored the first season.

Morgan’s casting joins several other recent additions to the ‘Heated Rivalry’ roster. Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie were previously announced in the roles of Harris and Troy, with series creator Jacob Tierney and executive producer Brendan Brady praising the pair for immediately connecting with the vulnerability and resilience at the core of their characters. Daniel Diemer and Shaheen Jafargholi have also joined as Ryan Price and Fabian Salah, characters described by Tierney and Brady as bold, complicated and deeply compelling additions to the world Reid created.

Production on Season 2 officially kicked off in Toronto in early August, with returning stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie back as Shane and Ilya alongside the newly expanded cast. Tierney previously told Entertainment Weekly that he didn’t plan for the wait between seasons to stretch anywhere close to two years, aiming instead to get new episodes out as quickly as possible while still maintaining the show’s quality.

That urgency reflects just how much attention the series has continued to receive since its debut. Williams and Storrie were even selected as official torchbearers for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 torch relay, a recognition that speaks to how far the show’s cultural footprint has spread well beyond typical streaming buzz.

While an exact premiere date has not been locked in, Tierney has indicated the second season is expected to arrive sometime in 2027, with some reports pointing toward an April release window. The creator has also confirmed that Season 2 will likely stick to a tighter six-episode format similar to the first season, preferring a more condensed storytelling approach over a longer episode count.

With production well underway and new cast additions like Morgan continuing to round out the ensemble, ‘Heated Rivalry’ appears to be building toward a second season that broadens its world significantly while staying true to the central romance that made the show such an unexpected hit in the first place. Given how quickly the series turned into a genuine phenomenon, anticipation for these new character reveals is likely to keep building in the months ahead.
