Henry Cavill’s long-awaited Highlander movie is still happening—but now it’s changing studios. The film, which has been in development for years, is moving from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists. The companies are in final talks, and the movie will still be released in theaters.

Director Chad Stahelski, known for the John Wick movies, is staying on as director. He has been working on the Highlander project for nearly 10 years. Cavill, who joined the movie in 2021, is still set to star.

At one point, Lionsgate wanted to create a full Highlander universe, with Stahelski leading the way. But now, United Artists will have full rights to the franchise.

Highlander began in 1986 with a movie about immortal warriors. The tagline, “There can only be one,” describes a world where these warriors fight each other until only one survives. The original film starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery and led to four sequels and three TV series.

Even though the studio is changing, the main team remains the same. Chad Stahelski will direct, and Henry Cavill will star.

Stahelski shared: “It’s just a tough nut to crack because the Highlander property is so involved and the mythology is so deep. But to try and make it our own, and be somewhat true to the original, yet do it in a way that makes it ours, is a little tricky. We don’t want to do a remake. We don’t want to do a reinvention. We want to do something that’s fresh, that utilizes the mythology of what everyone loves from the first movie.

Michael Finch, who worked on John Wick: Chapter 4, will write the script. Neal H. Moritz and Stahelski’s company 87Eleven Entertainment will produce the movie along with Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt from United Artists.
