The Mandalorians are some of the most prominent groups of people in the entire world of Star Wars, as these people are often called the strongest warriors in the galaxy. But while that may be true, the Mandalorians were also known to be matched only by the powers of the Jedi, who went to war with them a long time ago, thus causing them to have a deep distrust for anyone who used the Force. So, why and when did the Jedi wage war with the Mandalorians?

The Jedi didn’t wage war with the Mandalorians but fought them during the conflicts they had with the Republic. That’s because the Mandalorians often resisted the Republic. And because the Jedi were tasked to protect the peace of the Republic, they had to fight the Mandalorians thousands of years ago.

In the current Star Wars canon, there aren’t many things we know about the Mandalorian-Jedi War that caused a lot of damage to the Mandalorian homeworld. As such, we aren’t sure when this happened in canon, but we do know that thousands of years have passed since then. Now, let’s look at this long-standing conflict between the Jedi and the Mandalorians in greater detail.

What happened between the Jedi and the Mandalorians?

If there’s one thing that we know about the Star Wars world, it’s that the Jedi are not supposed to be warriors. As Yoda once told Luke Skywalker, wars make not one great. That’s because the Jedi were never supposed to fight wars but were meant to prevent them and maintain the peace.

But while that may be true, it was unavoidable for the Jedi to come into conflict with those who opposed them and their beliefs, especially if those opposing forces were the ones on the offensive.

The Mandalorians were some of the groups of people who were never actually friendly with the Jedi Order. A long time ago, the Mandalorians ended up becoming a warrior race of people who relied on their strength in battle. This became a norm within Mandalorian culture as the Mandalorians were often trained in the ways of the Mandalore at an early age so that they would grow up as fierce warriors.

And thanks to the Beskar Steel that could be mined in Mandalore, the Mandalorians developed armor and weapons that allowed them to win the wars that they fought against different people in the galaxy.

Of course, the Mandalorians were also proud people who only trusted in the strongest among them. As such, they only wanted the strongest warrior among them to be the one in charge of leading the Mandalorian people. And that was one of the reasons why the Mandalorians often tried to resist the Republic’s attempts at forcing them to join their ranks.

Out of all of the different systems in the galaxy, Mandalore remained independent for as long as the Mandalorians could remember because they never wanted to be part of the Republic as they would rather govern themselves. It was against the pride of the Mandalorian people to allow the Republic to contribute to the governance of their planet, which was why it was understandable why the Mandalorians never wanted anything to do with the Republic.

As such, the Mandalorians waged war on the Galactic Republic to ensure they would always stay independent. This was the reason why the Jedi and the Mandalorians came into conflict in the Legends storyline of Star Wars. However, it was never explored in canon why or how the Mandalorian-Jedi War started.

Nevertheless, because the Jedi were the keepers of the peace of the Republic, they were basically the soldiers of the Republic as they were often called to fight the different conflicts that the Republic found itself in.

Of course, the Jedi knew they were never supposed to be warriors or soldiers. But because it was important for them to fulfill their role of keeping the peace in the Republic, the Jedi had no choice but to resist the Mandalorians.

The Mandalorian-Jedi War allowed the Mandalorians to advance their weaponry and battle tactics, as they had no way of matching the power of the Force. It was the fact that the Mandalorians didn’t understand the nature of the Force that allowed them to try to develop new ways of fighting the Jedi, and that was one of the reasons why Mandalorians were often equipped with weapons that were difficult for the Jedi to counter. On top of that, Mandalorian Beskar Steel is the only metal strong enough to withstand a strike coming from a lightsaber.

When did the Mandalorians wage war on the Jedi?

In the Legends part of Star Wars, the Mandalorian-Jedi War started almost 4,000 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. After that, the Mandalorians and the Jedi continued to fight in different conflicts that happened between different periods of relative peace.

However, in the canon storyline of Star Wars, it was never mentioned when the Mandalorian-Jedi War started because this part of the history of Star Wars hasn’t been explored a lot. But we know that the Mandalorians and the Jedi fought thousands of years ago.

The conflicts between the Mandalorian and the Jedi happened throughout different periods in the galaxy’s history. But the last real conflict happened around a thousand years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. That was when the Mandalorians sent a skilled team to the Jedi Temple to steal the Darksaber from the Jedi Order. However, there was a relatively long period of peace between the two groups of people during the time of the High Republic.

The aftermath of the Mandalorian-Jedi War

There was no definite winner in the wars that the Mandalorian and the Jedi fought against one another. However, the aftermath of the battles damaged the entire planet of Mandalore. That’s because the once green and verdant world became a barren desert due to the damage caused by the conflicts between the Mandalorians and the Jedi.

As such, the Mandalorians were forced to live in domed cities on their own homeworld. Outside of the domed cities were barren and sandy plains that were once green and full of life. As such, Mandalore became a harsh planet to live on, and the Mandalorians despised the Jedi for turning their world into such a desolate place.

While the Mandalorians hated the Jedi, the Force, and whoever wielded it, they ended up working together during the Clone Wars when the Jedi Order was called by the New Mandalorians to assist them in certain internal matters.

After that, the Mandalorians sought the help of the Jedi to oust Darth Maul from power. And during the Imperial era, the Mandalorians also allied with a few Jedi to spark the fires of rebellion against the Empire.
