‘House of the Dragon’ Star Emma D’Arcy Breaks Down Rhaenyra’s Heartbreaking Reaction to Daeron’s Betrayal Twist
Emma D’Arcy says Rhaenyra Targaryen’s trust begins to fall apart after one shocking discovery in the latest episode of House of the Dragon. Speaking with Variety about Episode 3, the actor explained that Ormund Hightower’s deception does more than fool the queen. It changes the way Rhaenyra looks at everyone around her.
By the end of the episode, Rhaenyra learns that the young man presented as Daeron Targaryen is actually an imposter. The real Daeron remains out of reach, leaving Rhaenyra facing a dangerous choice if she wants to stop another possible rival to her claim. According to D’Arcy, this moment marks the beginning of a major shift in the queen’s mindset.
“I think there’s something interesting happening with the Ormund deception broadly and I think it marks the beginning of a kind of paranoia for Rhaenyra,” D’Arcy told Variety. “Ormund is a totally unknown quantity; he’s this kind of erratic element. And I think increasingly, and we see this as we go forward, he sort of becomes the boogeyman for Rhaenyra, and fuels a broader distrust of her council, her allies, her court at large.”
The actor also said the scene works because it creates fear inside the Red Keep itself. “There’s something wonderfully theatrical, I think, about that scene, about a case of mistaken identity, about a plant and discovering a stranger inside the castle walls. I think, again, that act does a lot intensify a distrust that Rhaenyra is feeling. A lack of stability in her position.”
The episode shows Rhaenyra settling into life on the Iron Throne after taking control of King’s Landing. Instead of enjoying her victory, she immediately faces one problem after another. The Red Keep is falling apart, the city’s people are hungry, money is limited, and she must make difficult choices while trying to prove she deserves to rule.
D’Arcy told Variety that returning to the Red Keep is emotional for Rhaenyra because it is also her childhood home. The memories of her father are everywhere, making it difficult to separate her personal feelings from her responsibilities as queen.

“I think there’s something nice that at once Rhaenyra is a monarch taking up her premiership, and at the same time, she is a person going back to the family home,” D’Arcy said. “It speaks to something that’s very exciting about the show broadly, which is the sort of fundamental entanglement of the personal and political here.”
One detail that stood out in the episode was Rhaenyra unexpectedly getting her period on her first full day as queen. D’Arcy appreciated that the story included such an ordinary human moment during such an important event.
“I loved it on the page. I love that amid a broader battle and desire for legitimacy, you get to see a person on the first day of the job, coming in as the equivalent of the CEO finally getting to have a look at the balance sheet. I like the pragmatism of that detail that Sarah Hess wrote in there,” the actor explained.
The episode also reminds viewers that Rhaenyra is still grieving the death of her son, Jacaerys. She even sees a vision of him walking through the Red Keep. According to D’Arcy, that grief affects many of her decisions as queen.
The actor believes Rhaenyra’s growing need to prove herself may be connected to that loss. “I think Rhaenyra’s feeling of instability, of having no safe harbor, no psychic safety, and the accompanying desire for legitimacy… I think that’s quite possibly the workings of grief. I think it’s possible that if Jace were at her side, she would feel steady and at home and in control.”
Rhaenyra also stages a feast where members of the nobility are served cooked rats as punishment for hoarding food during the war. D’Arcy described the moment as more than simple revenge.
“I would describe the dinner as a publicity stunt, and a choice one, at that,” the actor told Variety, explaining that the queen and her council are trying to win public support while dealing with limited resources.
Looking ahead, D’Arcy suggested that Rhaenyra’s relationship with Daemon remains complicated despite their renewed closeness this season. While Daemon appears fully committed to supporting her rule, the actor hinted that disagreements between them are far from over.
What do you think will be Rhaenyra's biggest challenge after Ormund's deception?
“I would say that there are power struggles in every relationship, and that Daemon and Rhaenyra are no different.”
