How Old Is Gamora in Every Guardians of the Galaxy Movie?
Guardians of the Galaxy became one of the most-known Marvel teams ever since they debuted on the big screen in 2014. James Gunn was the filmmaker responsible for introducing this team to the mainstream audience, and Guardians of the Galaxy eventually became a vital part of the MCU’s Infinity Saga, having one of the crucial roles in crossover events Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. One of the leading members of the Guardians is Gamora, the daughter of Mad Titan Thanos. Played by Zoe Saldaña, she’s been a part of the MCU since the introduction of the Guardians. And in this article, we’ll write about how old she is in each Guardians movie.
While most of the MCU characters are around the same age as their actors (apart from extreme exceptions like Thor, who’s over 1500 years old), Zoe Saldaña and her MCU character Gamora aren’t really the same age. From what we know, Gamora was around 29 years old during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, which takes place in 2018 (Zoe Saldaña was born in 1978, so she was 40 in 2018). Using simple math, we can see that Gamora was around 25 years of age when she was introduced to the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which takes place in 2014. The sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. takes place in 2014 as well. The original Gamora was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, and the alternate Gamora that returned in Avengers: Endgame, which takes place in 2023, is also 25 years old because she time-traveled there from 2014.
Gamora was born on the planet of Zen-Whoberi, a home planet of the green-skinned humanoid race known as Zehoberei or Zehobereians. While her history isn’t detailly known, we have learned everything that needed to be known about the character and her role in the MCU. Being an adopted daughter of Thanos, she had one of the crucial roles in Avengers: Infinity War. The next few paragraphs will dig deeper into her life and see how old she was during the key moments.
Gamora’s age through movies
Gamora was born on an alien planet, which most likely means that she perceives time differently than people born on Earth or people born in Asgard, who can live for thousands of years. While the MCU fans met Gamora in the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie, chronologically, the first key event of her life that we witnessed was in the flashback scene in Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos conquered her planet when she was just a child.
After his forces wiped out half of her planet, Thanos adopted her to train her to become the most fierce woman in the galaxy. It’s unknown how old Gamora was when Thanos adopted her, but she couldn’t have been over ten years old. Ariana Greenblatt, who played young Gamora in the movie, was 11 at the time of the movie’s release.
Fast forward to the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Gamora is a 25-year-old assassin and one of Thanos’ notable warriors. In 2014, Thanos was on his quest to find the Infinity Stones while Gamora was trying to find it too to betray him to set herself free from him. She eventually meets Peter Quill, who owned the Power Stone, along with Rocket, Groot, and Drax. After escaping from an interstellar prison known as Kyln, the team found a common goal: protecting the Power Stone from Thanos and his pawn Ronan.
After saving Xandar from Ronan and giving the Power Stone to Nova Corps, the Guardians of the Galaxy continued their journey and eventually met Peter’s father, Ego. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, although released in 2017, takes place only three months after the events of the first Guardians movie. So, we were still in 2014.
Four years after the events of the first two Guardians movies, in 2018, the team joined forces with the Avengers to stop Thanos from obtaining all the Infinity Stones. Gamora, now 29 years old, knew where the Soul Stone was but never revealed its location. Thanos tortures her adopted sister Nebula, and Gamora reveals that Soul Stone is on Vormir. Thanos takes her there, and after finding out that a great price must be paid, a soul for a soul, Thanos kills Gamora with tears in his eyes and obtains the Soul Stone.
Although Gamora died, the time heist that Avengers pulled off in Avengers: Endgame didn’t only restore half of the universe’s population but also brought Gamora from 2014 to 2023. The catch is that this alternate Gamora is from the time when she did not meet Guardians yet, so bringing her back to the team will be one of the storylines in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Considering that she literally jumped from 2014 to 2023, this alternate Gamora is still 25 years old at the end of Endgame.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 takes place at least two years later after the events in Avengers: Endgame. So, either 2025 or 2026. In 2025, the alternate Gamora will basically be 27 years old, which means that even with all the time that has passed, she would still be younger than the original Gamora at the time of her death.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be the closing chapter for this team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore it’s presumed that this will be the last movie in which Zoe Saldaña will play this character. James Gunn promised us an emotional ending for the Guardians, and although we can expect that we’ll say goodbye to at least one Guardian with tears in our eyes, given that the story of the original Gamora ended tragically, we really hope this alternate Gamora will find her happy ending.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be released on May 5, 2023.
