How Sarah Michelle Gellar, 48, Maintains a Happy Marriage With Freddie Prinze Jr., 50
Sarah Michelle Gellar recently shared the simple trick that keeps her marriage with Freddie Prinze Jr. strong after more than two decades. In an interview with People, the 48-year-old actress revealed that having separate bathrooms at home has helped prevent unnecessary arguments.
“You don’t have to be so fancy that there’s two bathrooms in your bedroom! There just has to be another bathroom available,” Gellar said. She explained that sharing a bedroom is fine, but sharing a sink is often where couples run into problems.
This small adjustment, she says, has been key to avoiding the kind of petty fights that can build up over time. Gellar and Prinze Jr., married since 2002, have kept their family life private, which she believes has been crucial for their relationship.
Raising their children, 16-year-old Charlotte and 13-year-old Rocky, out of the public eye has allowed them to focus on family rather than fame. “We’re allowed to live in that. And our fans have been so respectful of that,” she noted.
The actress also discussed separating her personal life from her career. “I always say I’m two people: I’m Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I’m Sarah Prinze. They’re different people,” she told People.
By keeping these worlds separate, Gellar says she can maintain a sense of balance and avoid letting work bleed into her home life. Her comments on marriage come at a time of professional disappointment.
The reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was canceled after a pilot was filmed. Gellar told Page Six Radio that creative disagreements contributed to the decision.
She added that a key executive “was not a fan of the original” series. She hopes the pilot never becomes public. “Because then everyone’s going to have an opinion on this and that. And pilots are not finished. It wasn’t done,” she said.
Despite setbacks, Gellar emphasizes that strong relationships require effort. “I think everything takes work in you, whether it’s a friendship, a work relationship or a marriage. You have to put the work in,” she said. Prinze Jr. agrees, telling Variety, “We work at it.”
Outside of family life, both remain busy professionally. Gellar recently returned to the supernatural genre with the series Wolf Pack and continues to grow her baking brand, Foodstirs. Prinze Jr. hosts a wrestling podcast and starred in the holiday film Christmas with You.
For Gellar and Prinze Jr., the combination of small household habits, privacy, and active effort has helped keep their marriage strong for 23 years, showing that sometimes, it’s the little things that matter most.
