Hugh Jackman Sets Sail as Long John Silver in Ridley Scott’s New ‘Treasure Island’ Movie
Netflix and streaming audiences may be focused on Ridley Scott’s upcoming survival drama The Dog Stars, but the veteran filmmaker is already preparing his next major project.
According to reports from industry sources, Scott is set to direct a new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island, with Hugh Jackman attached to play one of literature’s most famous pirates, Long John Silver.
The casting marks another iconic role for Jackman, who has built a career around portraying memorable characters across a wide range of genres. Over the years, audiences have seen him as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman, and more recently Robin Hood. Now he is preparing to take on the cunning pirate captain who has fascinated readers for generations.
The new film will be based on Stevenson’s 1883 adventure novel, a story that has inspired countless adaptations over the past century. The tale follows a young boy named Jim Hawkins, who becomes involved in a dangerous search for hidden treasure. Along the way, he encounters Long John Silver, a charismatic sailor whose true motives remain uncertain throughout much of the story.
While many details about the new adaptation remain under wraps, the project has already attracted attention thanks to the creative team involved. Ridley Scott will direct and produce the film through his Scott Free production company. The screenplay is being written by Jack Thorne, the Emmy-winning writer known for his work on Adolescence and several other acclaimed projects.
The combination of Scott, Thorne, and Jackman has immediately raised expectations among movie fans. Scott is widely known for directing major films such as Gladiator, Alien, Black Hawk Down, and The Martian. His ability to create large-scale cinematic worlds has made him one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, and many are curious to see how he approaches a classic adventure story filled with pirates, treasure maps, and betrayal.
Jackman’s involvement is also generating excitement because Long John Silver is one of the most layered characters in adventure fiction. He can be charming, intimidating, funny, and dangerous all at the same time. Those qualities have made the role a favorite among actors, and many believe Jackman’s screen presence makes him a strong choice for the character.
The announcement comes during a busy period for both star and director. Scott is currently preparing for the release of The Dog Stars, his post-apocalyptic drama starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley. A new trailer for that film was recently released ahead of its theatrical debut later this year.
Jackman also has another major release on the horizon. He will next appear in The Death of Robin Hood, a darker take on the legendary outlaw story. With multiple high-profile projects arriving close together, the actor continues to show no signs of slowing down.
For now, plot details and production dates for Treasure Island have not been revealed. However, the prospect of seeing Hugh Jackman step into the boots of Long John Silver under Ridley Scott’s direction is already enough to make the project one of the most talked-about upcoming adaptations. If the film captures the adventure, mystery, and excitement of Stevenson’s beloved novel, it could become a major event for movie audiences when it finally reaches the big screen.
