The character Navarrette is stepping into carries a lot of history. Rogue is an earnest, outspoken and kind hearted mutant with a strong southern accent, cursed with a tragic power, unable to touch people without draining them of their life force.
Her mutation is something of a mixed blessing though, since it also lets her absorb other mutants’ powers, turning her into someone who can shift the tide of a battle with a single touch.
Navarrette plays Rogue as the Southern mutant whose power to absorb others’ abilities and memories through skin contact means she cannot touch another person without harm, making her a rather isolated figure within the X-Men canon.
