Inde Navarrette Reportedly Turned Down These Two Major Films to Join Marvel’s ‘X-Men’
Inde Navarrette’s rapid rise from promising television performer to one of Hollywood’s most closely watched young stars has taken another major turn. After breaking out with the horror hit ‘Obsession,’ the actress has now secured a place in Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated ‘X-Men’ reboot, putting her on a very different career trajectory from the one she appeared to be following earlier this summer.
Navarrette’s momentum has been building quickly since her performance in ‘Obsession’ put her on the industry’s radar. The film became a major commercial success, while Navarrette began meeting with some of Hollywood’s most prominent filmmakers, including Michael Mann and Jake Schreier, the director attached to Marvel’s new ‘X-Men’ movie.
Now, a new report sheds light on just how significant the Marvel opportunity may have been for Navarrette’s career decisions. According to Page Six, the actress was previously on the shortlist for a role in Michael Mann’s ‘Heat 2,’ but ultimately moved out of contention after committing to Marvel’s ‘X-Men’; the report also says she passed on a horror project directed by Mattias Hoehne that would have paid her $2.5 million.
The ‘Heat 2’ connection is particularly notable because Navarrette had already confirmed that she met with Mann while the filmmaker was assembling the cast for his long-awaited follow-up to ‘Heat.’ The project has since locked in Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale, with Bale playing Vincent Hanna and DiCaprio portraying Chris Shiherlis, two characters connected to roles originally played by Al Pacino and Val Kilmer.
Navarrette’s meeting with Mann was revealed alongside her conversation with Schreier, making the pair of potential projects among the biggest opportunities attached to her name at the time. She had also expressed an interest in working with both directors, while saying she would be open to joining Marvel, although neither project had been publicly confirmed as a casting decision then.
That uncertainty has since disappeared. Marvel officially unveiled Navarrette as Rogue during Disney’s D23 presentation, alongside a new generation of X-Men performers including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
The casting represents a particularly major step for Navarrette because Marvel’s reboot is expected to establish a new generation of mutant characters within the MCU. Reuters reported that the film is scheduled for release in May 2028, with Jake Schreier directing and the newly announced ensemble positioned as Marvel’s next major take on the X-Men following the franchise’s previous Fox era.
Navarrette’s path to that opportunity has been unusually fast. Before ‘Obsession,’ she was best known for television work including ‘Superman & Lois’ and ’13 Reasons Why,’ but her breakout performance dramatically expanded the kinds of projects being discussed around her. By July, reports were already describing her as an actress meeting with major filmmakers while Hollywood considered where she could fit into several high-profile productions.
Her decision also highlights the difficult choices that can come with a sudden career breakthrough. A role in a Michael Mann crime epic would have offered the prestige of working with one of Hollywood’s most distinctive filmmakers, while the reported horror project carried a substantial $2.5 million payday; Marvel, meanwhile, offers the possibility of becoming part of one of the industry’s biggest long-term franchises. The fact that Navarrette ultimately committed to ‘X-Men’ makes the decision even more intriguing now that her role as Rogue is official.
There is still plenty that remains unknown about Rogue’s place in Marvel’s new mutant universe, including how extensively the character will feature and how the film will introduce her alongside the rest of the team. What is clear is that Navarrette has gone from being a rising horror star to one of the faces of Marvel’s next X-Men era in a remarkably short period of time.
