Inde Navarrette’s ‘X-Men’ Rogue Reveal Gets Roaring Ovation From D23 Crowd
Casting reveals rarely generate the kind of visceral, in-the-room reaction that gets clipped and shared across social media for days afterward. But that’s exactly what happened this past weekend, when Marvel Studios pulled back the curtain on its rebooted X-Men lineup in front of a packed house.
The Disney D23 fan event in Anaheim has become something of a proving ground for major franchise announcements, and this year’s Marvel panel didn’t disappoint. President Kevin Feige took the stage to unveil the mutant team fans have been speculating about for months, and the crowd’s energy only kept building with each name revealed.
Then came the moment that stole the show. Footage circulating online captures the audience’s explosive reaction the instant Inde Navarrette was confirmed as the film’s new Rogue, with cheers erupting across the venue as her name flashed on screen.
It’s easy to see why the reveal hit differently than the others. Navarrette wasn’t even the most heavily rumored name for the role heading into the weekend, and her casting arrived as one of the genuine surprises of the night, catching plenty of longtime X-Men fans off guard.
Just months ago, Navarrette was best known for a supporting role on The CW’s now-canceled ‘Superman & Lois,’ playing Sarah Cushing across all four seasons. Her career trajectory shifted dramatically after she headlined ‘Obsession,’ Curry Barker’s breakout horror film that turned into one of the biggest box office surprises of the year, grossing more than $400 million worldwide off a budget of roughly $750,000.
That performance earned Navarrette a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Horror Movie and put her firmly on Hollywood’s radar. Interestingly, she had previously expressed interest in playing a different X-Men character altogether, telling reporters weeks before the reveal that she hoped to land the role of Mystique after meeting with director Jake Schreier.
Instead, Marvel handed her one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. Rogue, the Southern mutant whose power to absorb others’ abilities and memories through touch leaves her unable to make physical contact without causing harm, has been a fan favorite since her earliest comic book appearances and has carried significant weight in live-action before.
Navarrette becomes the first actor to portray Rogue in live action since Anna Paquin, whose take on the character anchored Fox’s original ‘X-Men’ trilogy throughout the 2000s and helped introduce mainstream audiences to the mutant world. That’s a substantial legacy to inherit, especially with more than a decade having passed since the character last appeared on screen.
The reveal didn’t happen in isolation, either. Navarrette joins a stacked new ensemble that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Maya Boyd as Storm, with Adam Driver confirmed in a villainous turn as Mister Sinister.
Even members of Rogue’s own history have weighed in since the announcement. Lenore Zann, who has voiced the character across three decades of animated projects including the original 1992 series and ‘X-Men ’97,’ posted a warm welcome message to Navarrette shortly after the reveal, marking a symbolic handoff between eras of the character.
Marvel’s rebooted ‘X-Men,’ directed by Jake Schreier, is set to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028. With filming expected to begin next year and a cast already generating this level of excitement before a single frame has been shot, anticipation for the film shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
