‘Injustice’ Director Would Like to Make a ‘Marvel vs. DC’ Fighting Game
Like it or not, superhero characters are a part of everyday entertainment nowadays. You don’t need to be a comic book reader anymore to have at least basic knowledge about the most popular superheroes, such as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman. Even B-list characters such as Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad aren’t so unknown among the general audience anymore, thanks to the growing popularity of superhero characters through movies, television series, and video games.
The most popular video games based on Marvel and DC publications today are arguably Rocksteady’s ‘Batman: Arkham’ franchise and Insominac’s ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ franchise, but some other video game developers also developed games such as ‘Marvel’s Avengers,’ ‘Gotham Knights,’ and ‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.’ Also, many upcoming video games are currently in development.
These games are played from a third perspective, but there’s also a popular ‘Injustice’ franchise, which can be described as “less violent ‘Mortal Kombat’ with DC characters.” The developers of the ‘Mortal Kombat’ franchise developed two ‘Injustice’ games, which both received a positive response.
‘Injustice’ and ‘Mortal Kombat’ director wants to make a ‘Marvel vs. DC’ fighting game!
‘Mortal Kombat’ is one of the most well-known fighting video game franchises of all time, and all of its beauty was brought to the ‘Injustice’ franchise when it kicked off in 2013. When NetherRealm Studios developed a DC game that works so well as a fighting game in which two characters are fighting in a 2.5D arena, some fans had to ask themselves how it would look if the same game were made with Marvel characters.
The creative director of NetherRealm is aware of that, although it would be hard to make it a reality since NetherRealm Studios is owned by Warner Bros. Games, which holds the rights for all DC characters. Who knows how many negotiations and deals would need to be realized with Disney for such a game to happen? Still, no one can forbid us to dream about it.
“I mean, we did a number of games with DC characters. When you’re kids and you’re like, ‘Who would win in a fight, Mighty Mouse or Superman?’ Just these dumb different universe things. There’s part of us that still [has those] immature conversations. To me, Spider-Man and Batman would be the coolest thing in the world. So, of course, we’d love to do that. But it’s probably very difficult to jump that hurdle.”

When you are a fan of superheroes, you probably encountered the “Could that Marvel character defeat that DC character, and vice-versa?” question countless times. Although ‘Injustice’ games aren’t really realistic since you can, for example, defeat Darkseid with Harley Quinn alone, it would certainly be interesting to put Batman against Iron Man, Thor against Wonder Woman, or Captain America against Superman in one such game.
NetherRealm Studios’ newest video game, ‘Mortal Kombat 1,’ is set to be released on September 19, 2023.
