Tom Cruise is preparing to show audiences a side of himself they have never seen before, and one of Hollywood’s biggest filmmakers believes fans are not ready for it. J.J. Abrams has shared his excitement for Cruise’s upcoming movie ‘Digger’, saying the actor’s performance could become one of the most surprising moments of his career.

The filmmaker recently reacted to a career retrospective video shared by Cruise on social media. The video highlighted some of the actor’s biggest roles before offering a brief look at his next project, ‘Digger’, which has already become one of the most talked-about films of the year.

After seeing early footage from the movie, Abrams said he has no doubt that Cruise is about to deliver something special. In a post on X, Abrams wrote, “My dear friend is no doubt about to blow our collective mind with Digger. What an undeniably spectacular career. What a bold and wild next step. Only seen a taste of the film… cannot wait for October to see the rest!”

The comments have added even more attention to a film that already has a lot of curiosity surrounding it. While Cruise is best known for action movies like ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Top Gun’, ‘Digger’ will show the actor taking on a much different type of role.

In the upcoming Warner Bros. film, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a powerful oil businessman whose actions may have caused a major environmental disaster. The story reportedly follows his attempt to present himself as humanity’s savior while dealing with the consequences of his choices.

Cruise’s transformation for the role has also surprised fans. The actor appears with a Southern accent, a larger physical appearance, and an aged look featuring thinning white hair. The dramatic change marks one of his most unusual character performances in recent years.

The cast around Cruise is also filled with major talent. The film features John Goodman as the President of the United States, along with Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons in key roles.

‘Digger’ also reunites Cruise with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the filmmaker behind award-winning movies such as ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Revenant’. The project has gained attention not only because of its cast but also because of Iñárritu’s reputation for creating ambitious and challenging stories.

Abrams and Cruise have a long history together, first working on the 2006 action movie ‘Mission: Impossible III’. Over the years, both have spoken highly of each other’s work, making Abrams’ praise for ‘Digger’ even more meaningful.

Cruise’s recent career celebration video also reminded fans of the actor’s long history in Hollywood. The retrospective included clips from films such as ‘Top Gun’, ‘Rain Man’, ‘Born on the Fourth of July’, and ‘Jerry Maguire’.

In the caption for the video, Cruise thanked the many artists and crews who helped create his films over the decades. “For the last 46 years, it has been my privilege to work alongside countless talented artists and crews to create these characters, stories, and films for you all,” he wrote.

The first trailer for ‘Digger’ is expected to arrive soon, with the movie scheduled to hit theaters later this year. With early praise from a filmmaker like J.J. Abrams and a completely different role for Cruise, the film is shaping up to be one of the actor’s most unexpected projects yet.
