J.K. Rowling Posts Bizarre AI Video, Internet Points to Black Mold
J.K. Rowling is drawing attention again on social media, but this time for a post that has left many people confused. The Harry Potter author and frequent X user shared a video combining a controversial tweet with AI-generated images, and the internet has been reacting with both criticism and jokes.
Tell me again how gender identity ideology isn’t homophobic. Would you trust this UK doctor, who was suspended from practicing by the medical council and now heads up quasi-medical trans advocacy group GenderGP, to be sympathetic to a young girl who’s attracted to other girls? pic.twitter.com/yDRZL6DrcL

On September 8, Rowling posted on X that she believes “gender ideology” is homophobic. The post included a short video featuring a tweet from Dr. Helen Webberley. The tweet read, “Have you noticed that the only argument they have is that if you have a willy, you must be a man. I wonder whether an absolute fear of willies is what drives them? Phallophobes need help, bless them, cos some people find willies wealy wealy scarwy.”
After a few seconds, the video replaced the tweet with images that appeared to be AI-generated. These images looked like social media comment threads but contained no real words, just scrambled letters and distorted symbols. The clip also included a sound similar to typing on a phone. Many viewers were left puzzled about the message Rowling was trying to convey.

Rowling has become more well-known for her anti-trans posts than her novels in recent years, and this latest video sparked both confusion and ridicule. Fans quickly returned to a long-running joke about her X profile picture, which in 2024 was noticed for showing what appeared to be black mold on the wall behind her.
“Sorry but is that black mould growing up the walls of her house? Is that why she’s the way she is,” asked @mushycrouton on X.
Other users joined in, joking about the mold as a possible explanation for her shift from beloved children’s author to outspoken social media figure. “Jk rowling’s profile picture revealing visible black mold that is apparently growing up her walls is probably the greatest Chekhov’s gun of all time,” wrote @MNateShyamalan.
The discussion resurfaced after Rowling’s recent AI post, with fans once again referencing the mold in their comments.
