The DCEU became the DCU after Safran and Gunn took over as co-CEOs/presidents. Other than the projects that were already in development long before Gunn took over – like ‘The Flash’ or ‘Aquaman 2’ – most DCEU projects got scrapped, and the DCU is looking to start over.
That being said, not every project from the DCEU is getting the boot. James Gunn decided to keep things like his ‘Peacemaker’ series intact. In fact, ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 is already in pre-production, and it probably won’t be long before we get a release date or at least a release window.
Now, seeing that we’ll already dive deep into the DCU by the time the second season of John Cena’s ‘Peacemaker’ comes out, fans were wondering if the show will even be a part of the DCU in the future.
And, the question makes sense – if Season 1 happened within the DCEU universe, how can Season 2 just jump right into the DCU without a blink? Well, as it turns out, it can’t, and it won’t.
James Gunn shared a video on Threads of John Cena playing Queen on the piano between takes on ‘Peacemaker,’ and a fan with the username durell.randle asked the director if Season 2 would take place in the ‘new DCU/new continuity’ or if the change would at least be addressed before they just jump into action.
To the joy of many fans, James Gunn answered both questions by saying: ‘Yes and yes.’
Obviously, that means two things. One – ‘Peacemaker’ will be a part of the DCU, much like ‘Waller’ – a show about Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller that’s expected to be released in 2024.
And, two – it won’t just be a hard-cut transition into the DCU without an explanation – the transition will be addressed in the show.
As for when the fan-favorite series is returning with Season 2, Gunn didn’t give us a date, but he did reveal his plans:
“’Peacemaker’’s coming back right after ‘Superman.’ That’s my next thing.”
What Gunn meant was that as soon as he finishes his work on ‘Superman: Legacy,’ he’s jumping hands-on into the production of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2. Meaning we could get ‘Peacemaker’ as early as mid-to-late 2025, but more likely in 2026.
‘Peacemaker’ is currently available exclusively on Max.
