James Gunn is keeping the hype very much alive. The DC Studios co-CEO posted a striking behind-the-scenes image on X this weekend, captioned simply “Inside the Fortress,” showing David Corenswet’s Superman standing at the threshold of the iconic Fortress of Solitude.

The photo racked up nearly 300,000 views within hours, a clear signal that fan appetite for everything related to ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is running high.

‘Superman’ opened to broadly positive reviews after its summer release, landing an 83% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 93% audience rating, while earning 616.8 million dollars globally to become the highest-grossing superhero film of last year. That success gave Gunn and DC Studios the runway they needed to push forward quickly on a sequel, and the momentum has not slowed since.

Principal photography on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is well underway, with David Corenswet recently spotted filming on location in Atlanta, Georgia, rigged to wires in his Superman suit, with Gunn himself also present on set. The sequel will see Nicholas Hoult return as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan back as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Adria Arjona newly joining the cast as Maxima, with the villainous Brainiac brought to life by German actor Lars Eidinger.

Teaser art has already confirmed that Lex Luthor will don his classic Warsuit from the comics, marking what should be one of the more visually exciting additions to the sequel. Brainiac, one of Superman’s most formidable foes, first appeared in Action Comics in 1958 and is known in the source material for traveling the universe shrinking and bottling cities to absorb their knowledge, including the Kryptonian capital of Kandor.

The plot of ‘Man of Tomorrow’ takes place 30 years after Superman arrived on Earth, opening with the Man of Steel suffering his first defeat before retreating to the Fortress of Solitude, unaware he is being followed by one of Luthor’s allies. Gunn has also confirmed a notable time jump in the DCU timeline between ‘Superman’ and the sequel, though the exact details of that gap have only recently been clarified.

Corenswet’s Superman will actually appear on screen before ‘Man of Tomorrow’ arrives, with the character confirmed to show up in ‘Supergirl’, opening June 26, though his role there is expected to be limited given the story centers on Kara Zor-El. For fans eager for more of Gunn’s DCU take on the Man of Steel, that cameo will have to hold them over until ‘Man of Tomorrow’ hits theaters on July 9, 2027. If today’s Fortress post is any indication, Gunn knows exactly how to keep the internet talking in the meantime.
