Jason Statham’s ‘Mutiny’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Keeps Climbing After Rocky Debut

Action star Jason Statham has built his career on a reliable formula: gritty revenge plots, brutal fight choreography and just enough charisma to carry a film even when critics aren’t fully on board. His latest outing has followed that exact pattern, though not without a bumpy start.

That film is ‘Mutiny,’ the R-rated revenge thriller that hit U.S. theaters on August 21. Directed by Jean-François Richet, the movie follows Cole Reed, a man framed for his billionaire boss’s murder who boards a cargo ship on a one-man mission for vengeance, only to uncover an international conspiracy along the way.

Critical reception was rocky right out of the gate, with the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score initially landing around 44 percent based on a limited set of reviews. That number has continued to shift in the days since release, climbing to 51 percent as more critics weighed in, though the score has fluctuated enough throughout the week to leave the film’s overall reputation somewhat unsettled.

That instability places ‘Mutiny’ among Statham’s more divisive recent releases, though it’s far from his lowest-rated project overall. That distinction still belongs to 2007’s ‘In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale,’ which holds a dismal 4 percent Tomatometer score, a bar ‘Mutiny’ clears with room to spare.

Statham’s filmography has always followed a familiar critical rhythm, and ‘Mutiny’ fits comfortably within that pattern. His highest-rated film remains 2015’s ‘Spy,’ which sits at an impressive 94 percent on the Tomatometer alongside a 78 percent audience score, proof that Statham can win over critics when the material calls for something different from his usual action fare.

More recent efforts have shown a similar mixed bag. ‘The Beekeeper’ scored 71 percent with critics in 2024, while ‘A Working Man’ landed at 46 percent the following year, and this year’s earlier release ‘Shelter’ came in at 64 percent. Against that backdrop, ‘Mutiny’s’ fluctuating score places it toward the lower end of Statham’s recent output, even as it continues to climb.

Critics have been split on the film’s merits. Some reviewers have praised its no-frills approach to action, with one calling the fight choreography “coherently choreographed in tactile surroundings,” while others have taken issue with the story’s predictability and lack of depth in Statham’s central character.

Despite the shaky critical reception, industry observers have pointed out that Statham’s films consistently outperform their Tomatometer scores when it comes to audience reaction. That pattern has held for years, with movies like ‘Wrath of Man’ earning a 68 percent critics’ score alongside a much stronger 90 percent audience score, and ‘The Beekeeper’ pulling in a 92 percent audience approval despite its more modest critical reception.

That trend appears to be repeating itself with ‘Mutiny’ as well. While an official Popcornmeter score wasn’t yet available at the time critics’ reviews began rolling in, early verified audience reactions have leaned notably positive, reinforcing the idea that Statham’s fanbase tends to enjoy his films regardless of what critics say.

The film’s supporting cast includes Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller and Adrian Lester, with Wallis in particular drawing praise from some critics as a highlight of the film even amid otherwise mixed reviews. With a runtime of 95 minutes and an R rating for language and bloody violence, ‘Mutiny’ delivers exactly the kind of stripped-down action experience longtime Statham fans have come to expect.

As the Tomatometer continues to shift in the days following release, it’s clear ‘Mutiny’ has landed in that familiar space many of Statham’s films occupy, divisive among critics, but embraced by the audiences who show up specifically for what he does best.
