Grief plays out differently for every family, and rarely as publicly as it has for the loved ones of Hayden Panettiere in the days following her death. The actress, best known for her breakout role in the superhero drama ‘Heroes,’ passed away on August 16 at the age of 36, leaving behind a legacy shaped as much by her career as by her openness about personal struggles.

In the aftermath, tributes poured in from fans, former co-stars and family members, each offering a different lens into who Panettiere was. Her father, Skip Panettiere, released a heartfelt statement describing her as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her.”

Her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, took a notably different tone. Speaking about her daughter’s death, Vogel described Panettiere as “amazing” and “talented” but added that she felt her daughter had “sadly lost her way,” a comment that quickly drew scrutiny given the two women’s long-documented estrangement.

That reaction didn’t sit well with CBS Mornings host Gayle King, who read Vogel’s statement live on air and didn’t hold back her response. “You know, guys, you read this and all I can think is, ‘Thanks, Mom, for nothing,'” King said on the broadcast, calling the moment a missed opportunity for Vogel to simply mourn her daughter without further commentary.

King’s frustration wasn’t rooted in speculation. She referenced a previous interview she’d conducted with Panettiere back in May, during which the actress described her relationship with her mother as “complicated” but still “a work in progress.” That context made Vogel’s public remarks feel especially jarring to King and her co-hosts.

CBS Mornings co-host Vladimir Duthiers echoed that sentiment, pointing out that Panettiere had spent years publicly acknowledging her own struggles, including in her memoir, where she wrote candidly about the pressures of growing up as a child star, postpartum depression and substance use. “She cannot respond now, and for her mother to use these days after Hayden’s death to just remind the world just how much trauma she caused, it’s unseemly,” Duthiers said, adding that a mother’s instinct should simply be to mourn.

Vogel managed Panettiere’s career from infancy through her years on ‘Heroes,’ a professional relationship the actress ultimately ended after describing it in her memoir as having grown toxic. That history has continued to color public perception of Vogel’s recent comments, particularly given how openly Panettiere had discussed the toll that dynamic took on her.

Vogel didn’t stop at commentary on her daughter’s path. In a separate statement to NBC News just days after Panettiere’s death, she referenced the actress’s boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, saying, “This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death.”

That remark added another layer of tension to an already difficult situation, with King ultimately suggesting that Vogel could have taken a cue from how Panettiere’s father chose to honor his daughter’s memory. King specifically pointed to the tone of Skip Panettiere’s statement as the kind of tribute she wished Vogel had offered instead.

Panettiere was reportedly found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at an Airbnb residence in Greenville, South Carolina, and was declared dead on August 16. As tributes and reflections on her life and career continue to circulate, the public disagreement between her mother and prominent media figures like King underscores just how complicated grief can become when a family’s private struggles play out in the public eye.

For fans who watched Panettiere grow from a child star into one of television’s most recognizable faces of the late 2000s, her death has reopened conversations about the pressures of fame she spent years speaking candidly about.
