Jason Statham’s New Box Office Disaster Surges to Number 1 on Amazon

Theatrical box office numbers don’t always tell the full story anymore, especially for action stars whose fan bases have quietly shifted toward watching movies at home rather than in theaters. Few actors illustrate that shift more clearly than one of Hollywood’s most reliable action stars, whose latest film just proved the point all over again.

Jason Statham has built an entire late-career niche around exactly this kind of pattern, delivering movies that underwhelm in theaters before finding a much larger audience once they hit streaming platforms. His newest release seemed destined for a rough finish after a genuinely bizarre setback in the days leading up to its debut.

That film, ‘Mutiny,’ has now rebounded from a theatrical run that topped out around $28 million worldwide to become the number one movie on Amazon’s video-on-demand chart in the United States. Directed by Jean-François Richet, the action thriller casts Statham as Cole Reed, a former London cop and special forces veteran turned private bodyguard who gets framed for his billionaire employer’s murder before sneaking aboard a cargo ship to hunt down the real culprits.

Did Amazon’s Accidental Leak Really Sink Jason Statham’s ‘Mutiny’ at the Box Office?

‘Mutiny’s’ box office struggles trace back to an accidental leak just days before its August 21 theatrical release, when Amazon briefly made the film fully available on Prime Video before pulling it down, giving pirates enough time to distribute it illegally across file-sharing sites. The film opened to just $7.7 million domestically for a sixth-place finish, then collapsed by sixty-four percent in its second weekend and another sixty-eight percent in its third.

Against a $40 million production budget, ‘Mutiny’ finished its theatrical run with a worldwide total landing somewhere between $21.9 million and $28 million depending on the source, a significant shortfall that made it Statham’s second box office disappointment of the year following January’s ‘Shelter,’ which grossed $49.3 million worldwide against a $50 million budget.

Critics were mixed on the film as well, with ‘Mutiny’ settling at a fifty percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences responded far more favorably, though, pushing the film to an eighty-six percent audience score, with the site’s consensus praising Statham’s “signature high-octane charisma” for delivering satisfying action entertainment.

Lionsgate moved quickly to get ‘Mutiny’ onto premium VOD roughly three weeks after its theatrical debut, and the strategy paid off almost immediately. The film has since climbed to the very top of Amazon’s VOD chart, outperforming several bigger theatrical releases from earlier in the year in the process.

This isn’t uncharted territory for Statham. Producer Basil Iwanyk, best known for his work on the ‘John Wick’ franchise, has argued that films starring Statham and fellow action star Gerard Butler shouldn’t be judged purely on domestic box office numbers, pointing to their unusually strong performance on home-video platforms as evidence that their theatrical runs function more like extended marketing campaigns than the true measure of success.

That theory tracks with Statham’s broader trajectory in recent years. His 2024 hit ‘The Beekeeper’ pulled in $152.4 million worldwide against a $40 million budget, directly leading to the greenlight for 2025’s ‘A Working Man,’ even as his two 2026 releases struggled to match that same theatrical momentum before finding new life at home.

For an actor whose fan base has clearly settled into a comfortable rhythm of streaming over ticket-buying, ‘Mutiny’s’ rebound feels less like a fluke and more like business as usual.

What do you think about Mutiny becoming Amazon’s #1 movie after struggling in theaters?
