Jeff Hiller Gets Emmy-Nominated Promotion as ‘Widow’s Bay’ Ups Him to Series Regular for Season 2

Apple TV’s haunted-island comedy has been on a serious hot streak lately, racking up acclaim that’s turned it into one of this year’s biggest breakout hits among new series. Between its horror-comedy premise and an ensemble stacked with recognizable faces, ‘Widow’s Bay‘ managed to carve out a distinct identity in a crowded streaming landscape almost immediately.

That success has already translated into serious awards recognition, with the show pulling in a total of nineteen Emmy nominations, making it the clear frontrunner among all new series this year. Now, ahead of its already-confirmed second season, the show is making a notable change to one of its most memorable supporting players.

Jeff Hiller, who plays Town Hall staffer Dale under Matthew Rhys’ Mayor Tom Loftis, will be promoted from guest star to series regular for Season 2. The jump comes after Hiller became a genuine fan favorite during the show’s first season, particularly for Dale’s now-iconic panicked scream, “This place is a death trap!”

Hiller’s path onto the show traces back decades before ‘Widow’s Bay’ even existed. He met series creator Katie Dippold in an improv group roughly twenty-five years ago, and when it came time to audition for the role, he submitted a self-tape without telling his old friend he was going for it.

The role almost didn’t last very long at all. After Hiller booked the part, Dippold warned him that Dale, as originally written, was simply a Town Hall staffer fated to die early in the story. As the script evolved during production, though, Dippold called him with a change of plans, asking, “Do you mind if I don’t kill you?”

Hiller has credited that long-standing improv history with Dippold for shaping how Dale’s comedic breakdowns ended up working on screen. Reflecting on their creative shorthand, he told Deadline, “I have a shorthand with Katie. She liked when I would melt down and scream. The whole team would always make me do these dramatic monologues where I would end up screaming and crying on the ground.”

That improvisational freedom occasionally made it into the finished episodes, even when Hiller wasn’t sure it would. He recalled one bit he was quietly proud of despite it going largely unnoticed by viewers, involving a moment where Tom mutters that he doesn’t think his microphone is on.

Beyond his role on ‘Widow’s Bay,’ Hiller has been having a genuinely remarkable stretch of awards attention. He’s currently Emmy-nominated for his guest role as Larry in Apple TV’s ‘Pluribus,’ Vince Gilligan’s mind-melding pandemic drama starring Rhea Seehorn, and he already won an Emmy last year for his supporting turn as Joel in ‘Somebody Somewhere.’

Season 2 details remain largely under wraps for now, though creator Katie Dippold has offered some encouraging updates on the writing process. Speaking during a panel, she described the Season 2 writers’ room as being in a strong place, noting the team is already several weeks in and finding it more enjoyable than laying the show’s initial groundwork required.

Matthew Rhys has also teased what’s ahead, describing Season 1’s finale as setting up a “massive cliffhanger” for the sophomore season, with his character now aware that the island’s ancient curse is real and tied directly to his son’s fate. With Hiller’s elevated role and a confirmed second season already taking shape, ‘Widow’s Bay’ appears to be building toward an even bigger creative swing the second time around.
