Jeffrey Dean Morgan Says He Regrets One of the Most Controversial Moments in ‘The Walking Dead’ and Would Change That Plotline if He Could

The Walking Dead made many changes from the comics, but one of the most shocking moments stayed the same: Negan brutally killing Glenn with a bat. This scene left a big impact on the show and its fans.
After that episode aired, the series lost about two million viewers and never quite recovered. Many fans say they stopped watching because of Glenn’s death, even though it followed the comics closely. Other big deaths, like Carl Grimes, didn’t cause as much upset.
Recently, in an interview on First We Feast, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played Negan, talked about that moment with Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie. Morgan admitted that if he could change one thing about the show’s story, it would be not killing Glenn.
“I’m just gonna say this, it would have made both our lives easier, maybe not kill Glenn,” Morgan said.
Cohan agreed, and Morgan added, “It would have shifted the stories in a lot of ways, but you wouldn’t be mad at me.”

They joked that if Glenn had survived, Morgan and Cohan might even be friends on the show. Morgan also mentioned that Glenn might have died in a different way, but he wished he wasn’t the one to do it.
The death of Glenn also meant the loss of actor Steven Yeun, who went on to become a big star. Yeun was the first Asian-American nominated for a Best Actor Oscar and won an Emmy for his role in the series Beef. Now, he stars in Amazon’s popular show Invincible. Yeun never came back to The Walking Dead for guest appearances or flashbacks, which many other characters did.
Looking back, killing Glenn was probably one of the biggest mistakes the show made. Even though it was true to the comics, it hurt the series’ popularity and story.
The Walking Dead universe is now smaller, focusing on just two shows: Dead City with Maggie and Negan, and Daryl Dixon. Daryl’s show is doing better and keeps getting renewed, while Dead City’s future is less certain.
AMC doesn’t want to end the franchise, but the days when the show was at its best are long gone. Many agree that the peak was before Glenn’s death, and after that, the show started to decline.
