Jeremiah Actor Gavin Casalegno Teases ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Movie Will Leave Fans Shocked

Wrapping up a beloved book-to-screen adaptation is never a simple task, especially when the source material has already told fans exactly how the story ends. Yet somehow, ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty‘ keeps finding new ways to surprise its devoted fanbase even as the finish line comes into view.

That’s precisely the tease Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah Fisher on the hit Prime Video series, just dropped about the franchise’s upcoming send-off. The show wrapped its third and final season back in September, but Prime Video revealed hours after that finale aired that the story wasn’t quite finished, with a feature film written and directed by author Jenny Han set to properly close out the saga.

Speaking with PEOPLE while promoting his new horror-thriller ‘The Devil’s Mouth,’ Casalegno finally offered a small glimpse into what fans can expect from the film. Asked whether he could share anything about the upcoming movie, the actor teased that the ending still has plenty in store.

“Oh, man. I think people are going to be surprised,” Casalegno told PEOPLE. He added that he’s especially curious to see how audiences react to Han’s “closing thoughts and statements” as she brings the trilogy to its definitive conclusion.

That comment lines up with previous hints from Han herself, who has consistently promised that the story’s true ending would catch longtime readers off guard. Discussing the show’s final season with Entertainment Weekly ahead of its premiere, Han explained that fans would encounter “things they think they know” mixed in with genuine surprises she’d been building toward.

Casalegno has been fairly candid about how little he actually knows regarding the movie’s plot, despite starring in the franchise since its earliest days. He previously joked to Vogue Italia during Milan Fashion Week that he’d tried and failed to pry information out of Han, admitting he was completely unaware of what comes next for his character.

The uncertainty extends to Jeremiah’s romantic future specifically, which took an unexpected turn in the season three finale when the character shared a surprise kiss with Denise, played by Isabella Briggs. Casalegno has described that moment as a genuine “curveball” for him as an actor, suggesting even the cast wasn’t fully prepared for where the story was headed heading into the finale.

He isn’t alone in that reaction either. Costar Sean Kaufman, who plays Steven, told PEOPLE he wasn’t nearly as caught off guard by the Jeremiah and Denise pairing, noting that certain lines from earlier episodes hinted at the direction the storyline was headed, even if most viewers didn’t catch on until the moment actually played out on screen.

The love triangle at the heart of the franchise, between Belly Conklin, Conrad Fisher, and Jeremiah, has remained the emotional core of the series since it first premiered, and speculation about how the movie will ultimately resolve that dynamic has only intensified since the season three finale aired. With Han returning to both write and direct the film personally, fans have reason to believe the ending will carry the same authorial voice that defined the original book trilogy.

Beyond his cryptic teases about the ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ movie, Casalegno also discussed his experience shooting ‘The Devil’s Mouth’ in Thailand alongside co-stars Lana Condor, Kathryn Newton, and Tayme Thapthimthong, describing the shift from studio work to shooting on boats and islands as a refreshing change of pace. For now, though, all eyes remain on what surprises Han has planned for Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah’s long-awaited final chapter.
