John Krasinski Is ‘100% On Board’ for More ‘Jack Ryan’ Movies and the Franchise Has Never Had More to Prove

The wait is officially over. ‘Jack Ryan: Ghost War’ landed on Prime Video on May 20, 2026, bringing John Krasinski back to one of streaming’s most recognizable spy thrillers after a three-year absence. The film picks up after the beloved Prime Video series, which concluded its four-season run in 2023, and drops audiences back into the dangerous world of international espionage alongside some very familiar faces.

What makes this moment more than just a nostalgia play is the question hanging over every frame of the movie. Will ‘Ghost War’ be a one-off farewell or the opening chapter of something far bigger? Based on everything Krasinski has been saying publicly, fans might not have to wait long to find out.

From Small Screen to Bigger Mission: How ‘Ghost War’ Came Together

The road to ‘Ghost War’ started in October 2024, when Amazon MGM Studios officially announced a feature film continuation of the hit Prime Video series, more than a year after the show’s final season had concluded. The untitled project was confirmed to star Krasinski alongside Wendell Pierce as CIA deputy director James Greer and Michael Kelly as Mike November, with all three reprising their roles from the original run. Sienna Miller also joined the ensemble as MI6 officer Emma Marlowe, adding an entirely new dynamic to the team.

Behind the camera, Krasinski co-wrote the screenplay alongside Aaron Rabin, who served as a co-executive producer and writer on season four. Principal photography kicked off in January 2025 in London and wrapped in late July of that year. The film clocks in at a tight 105 minutes and is produced in association with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media.

The story follows Ryan as he is pulled back into the world of espionage after a covert mission uncovers a deadly international conspiracy, reuniting him with former CIA boss James Greer and field operative Mike November as they navigate a treacherous web of betrayal from an enemy who knows their every move. It is the sixth installment in the broader franchise, which has included films like ‘The Hunt for Red October’ starring Alec Baldwin and ‘The Sum of All Fears’ starring Ben Affleck in earlier continuities.

Krasinski’s Commitment to the Jack Ryan Film Franchise

Whatever the critical response may have suggested in the film’s first days, Krasinski has made his position abundantly clear. The actor stated he would return to the role of Jack Ryan “100%” if audiences want more, and his enthusiasm for continuing the character in film format is anything but performative. His co-writing credit on ‘Ghost War’ signals a level of creative investment rarely seen in major spy thrillers, going well beyond the responsibilities of a series lead.

Speaking with Screen Rant‘s Liam Crowley, Krasinski said he would love to continue ‘Jack Ryan’ as a film series, explaining that moving to a different format had made him realize the character still had significant room to grow. He confirmed that “being in a different format just means you can tell different kinds of stories,” and that it feels like there are definitely “more stories to tell” in this world.

Director Andrew Bernstein shared that enthusiasm, welcoming Krasinski’s sequel ideas while noting that any follow-up should only happen if there is a genuinely worthy story to justify it.

The show itself earned strong critical respect during its original run, averaging an 80% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and earning nominations at the Emmys, the SAG Awards, and the Critics’ Choice Awards. That foundation of goodwill gives the franchise meaningful momentum heading into this new chapter.

The Canceled Spinoffs That Almost Expanded the Ryanverse

Not every planned extension of this universe made it to the screen. Amazon MGM Studios had developed a spinoff centered on Domingo “Ding” Chavez, the fan-favorite character introduced in season four and played by Michael Peña, but that project was ultimately shelved. Peña revealed in early 2026 that the cancellation was likely tied to rights issues surrounding the character, a behind-the-scenes obstacle that quietly derailed what many fans had genuinely been hoping to see.

The broader Ryanverse had also seen earlier attempts at expansion with ‘Without Remorse’, a feature film starring Michael B. Jordan as John Clark that was originally intended for theatrical release before being sent to streaming due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plans for a follow-up Rainbow Six spinoff connected to that story were never realized, and with Jordan now an Academy Award winner, a revival of that particular thread seems increasingly unlikely.

The canceled projects underline a familiar truth about franchise-building. Rights complications, shifting studio priorities, and changing star trajectories can shut down even the most promising expansions before they gain any momentum. ‘Ghost War’ represents the one thread that Amazon actually managed to pull through to the finish line.

Could the Jack Ryan Story Eventually Lead All the Way to the White House?

Here is where things get genuinely exciting for long-term fans of the source material. In an interview with JoBlo Celebrity Access, Krasinski addressed the possibility of Jack Ryan eventually becoming the US President, hinting that the franchise is “heading on a path that always follows Clancy.” Tom Clancy’s novels ultimately take Ryan all the way to the presidency, and Krasinski clearly has that trajectory on his radar.

The ending of ‘Ghost War’ was deliberately constructed to keep that door open, with CIA director James Greer recommending Ryan for the role of agency deputy director after a successful mission, effectively repositioning the character and setting up a natural next chapter.

That kind of institutional elevation is exactly the stepping stone Clancy used in his novels to move Ryan from field operative to political figure.

The franchise’s future will almost certainly depend on the success of this first movie and whether there proves to be significant demand for a follow-up. With Tom Clancy’s legacy, Prime Video’s backing, and decades of source novels still waiting to be adapted, very few espionage franchises have the same built-in flexibility to sustain themselves across as many decades as Jack Ryan.

Now that ‘Ghost War’ is streaming and Krasinski has planted his flag firmly in the ground, the only real question is whether you want to see this version of Jack Ryan sitting behind the Oval Office desk one day.
