‘Joker: Folie à Deux’: Composer Confirms the Movie Will Be a Musical
No matter how much struggling Warner Bros. and DC Studios are enduring right now with their cinematic universe, there’s no doubt that DC is doing pretty well with their standalone movies, although there have been only two of them in the last ten years. Since Christopher Nolan concluded his ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy in 2012, the only non-DCEU live-action movies WB and DC released are 2019’s ‘Joker’ and 2022’s ‘The Batman.’ Both of these movies were met with critical and commercial successes, and despite DCU kicking off soon, both of them will get sequels as the Elseworlds projects.
The original ‘Joker’ movie, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, was released in 2019 and achieved enormous success. The movie grossed $1.074 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won two of them: Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score for the composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. The Icelandic musician and composer returns to compose the score for the upcoming sequel, and she recently confirmed that ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will be a musical, which was suspected for a while now.

The most recent project Guðnadóttir worked on is ‘A Haunting in Venice,’ the third installment in Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot movie series. The composer recently discussed the movie with ComicBook.com since neither writers nor actors are allowed to promote movies while the strikes are ongoing in Hollywood. Of course, since ‘Joker’ is her most notable project, she was asked about the sequel as well.
“All I can say is there is going to be a lot of music. That’s all I can give away.”

Despite the enormous success the original Joker movie achieved, many fans agreed that this movie didn’t need a sequel. However, after playing coy for several years, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix announced the sequel, officially titled J‘oker: Folie à Deux,’ which in literal translation means “Joker: Madness for Two.”
Lady Gaga joined the project shortly after the announcement to play Harley Quinn to Phoenix’s Joker. The rumors and reports about the movie being a musical started circling around, and now we know it for sure. It doesn’t matter anymore if we think this sequel is needed, but judging only by the first movie, the anticipation for the sequel is certainly high.
Directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is scheduled to be released on October 4, 2024.
