Jon Abrahams Teases ‘Scary Movie 6’ Will Go After Modern Horror Hits Like ‘Backrooms’
Jon Abrahams is teasing that Scary Movie 6 will not just stick to classic horror targets, but will also take aim at very recent viral hits, including the internet horror phenomenon Backrooms.
In a new interview, Abrahams hinted that the upcoming sequel pushes its parody style into newer territory than fans might expect. He suggested that even modern horror trends are fair game this time around, including stories that have taken off online in the past few years.
“There’s some stuff in there that you’re gonna be like, ‘How the hell did they do that?’ Coughs Backrooms, what?” Abrahams said, pointing directly to the viral horror concept as one of the film’s surprise targets and the fact that Backrooms was released just a few weeks before Scary Movie.
The comment quickly sparked discussion among fans, especially because Backrooms has become one of the most recognizable internet-born horror ideas. The concept, which features endless yellow office-like corridors and a feeling of being trapped in a strange liminal space, has already inspired short films, games, and countless online interpretations.
According to early promotional material, the film does not stop at Backrooms. Teasers suggest that several recent horror hits are being included in the parody lineup.
These reportedly include M3GAN, Sinners, Weapons, Terrifier 3, A Quiet Place, Annabelle, and Get Out. The Scream franchise is also expected to play a key role in the story, continuing the long-running connection between Scary Movie and slasher films.
The film marks the return of the franchise after a long gap of 13 years. It is also the first installment since 2001 to feature direct involvement from the Wayans family in the writing process. Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans have reunited with Craig Wayans and Rick Alvarez to develop the script. The film is directed by Michael Tiddes.

Scary Movie 6 brings back familiar characters, including Cindy Campbell and her group, as they once again find themselves facing a masked killer tied to events from the past. The cast includes returning stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall, along with Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, and Anthony Anderson.
The story centers on a new wave of chaos when a killer believed to be connected to murders from 26 years ago resurfaces. While plot details remain limited, the film is expected to blend old-school franchise humor with modern horror references.
Scary Movie 6 is scheduled to release on June 5, and early comments from the cast suggest that its approach to parody will be more current, more chaotic, and more connected to today’s viral horror culture than ever before.
