Breaking news everyone! The Marvel Cinematic Universe will officially return another known name we have met in Netflix’s Marvel shows. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Bernthal is officially set to return as Frank Castle, also known as the anti-hero Punisher in the upcoming MCU Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again!

Jon Bernthal played Frank Castle/Punisher in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil series (which is now streaming on Disney+) in 2016. One year later, he got his own spin-off series, The Punisher, which premiered on Netflix, and the series returned for the second season in 2019. After the second season’s release, the rights for Marvel characters were returned to Disney, forcing Netflix to end all their Marvel shows. The fans wanted Marvel Studios to bring back all these characters, and it seems that this is exactly what Marvel Studios is doing right now.

Netflix’s Daredevil starring Charlie Cox, first premiered on it in 2015 and concluded with the third season in 2018. Both Daredevil and The Punisher series received critical acclaim, and fans really wanted to see more of Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal in these roles. Cox had a special cameo appearance in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Daredevil’s archnemesis Kingpin, returned in the Hawkeye series on Disney+.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige announced that Cox’s Daredevil would return in the brand-new series Daredevil: Born Again, which is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2024. The series will have 18 episodes, and Vincent D’Onofrio will return as Kingpin. Now we got a confirmation that Jon Bernthal will be the third known name in that series, although some reports say that Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson, who had main roles in the Daredevil series, aren’t expected to return.

Apart from Spider-Man: No Way Home, Charlie Cox played Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the She-Hulk series last year as well, and both he and D’Onofrio are also set to appear in Echo, the upcoming Hawkeye series spin-off in which Alaqua Cox will reprise the role of Maya Lopez, also known as Echo.

We don’t know for sure what Marvel Studios is planning, apart from the fact that we can expect two new Avengers movies in 2025 and 2026 that will reach the climax of the current Multiverse Saga. It’s unknown whether these returning characters will be a part of those crossover movies, but officially canonizing those Netflix shows surely looks like they’re cooking something exciting for the fans. With all these returns, it seems like we just need Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist back to reassemble the Defenders again.

Daredevil: Born Again is currently in the early stages of production. The series is expected to arrive in 2024 on Disney+.
