Jon Watts Reportedly Not Coming Back to Direct Tom Hollands Spider Man 4

MCU has quite a slate of movies coming up, even though Marvel Studios has hit a rough patch with the last couple of projects. There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.

So far, talking about the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has three standalone movies and a fourth on the way. This was confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that the work on the sequel has been ongoing but stopped due to the solidarity with the ongoing WGA Strike at the time. Just several months ago, rumors were circulating that Watts is ready to return again as ‘Spider-Man’ 4 director.

Now MyTimeToShineHello, a reputable scooper and leaker posted on X allegedly verified claims that Jon Watts is not returning to direct the upcoming Spider-Man movie.

Do you know what this means? Drew Goddard is once again the prime candidate to direct it.

Goddard is perhaps best known to the general public as the man behind ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Angel,’ ‘Lost,’ and ‘The Cabin in the Woods.’ Fans of the MCU hold him in dear memory due to his association with ‘Daredevil’ Netflix series, which was praised for bringing the iconic Man Without Fear to life quite faithfully.

Goddard was also rumored to be the director of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ but that fell through, and Watts came to direct the hit franchise. Watts directed 3 out of 3 ‘Spider-Man’ movies in the MCU and was so devoted to the job that he started a collection of rare spiders.

He was also the first man to be called when the ‘Fantastic Four’ project was in development but he exited the project back in April 2022. Currently, Watts is working on the 6th ‘Final Destination’ movie and it looks like he is moving on to Star Wars projects. In May 2022, it was announced that Watts would be creating and executive producing a Star Wars TV series titled ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ for Disney+. The show, set after the events of Return of the Jedi, is inspired by Amblin and is scheduled to premiere in 2024.
