Eternia’s most underrated henchman is back, and nobody saw him coming. Among the villains getting their moment in the spotlight in the recent behind-the-scenes featurettes for ‘Masters of the Universe’ are Tri-Klops, Spikor, Goat Man, and Karg, marking the first detailed visual reveal of these antagonists in the promotional material released so far.

For longtime He-Man fans, Karg’s surprise inclusion in the 2026 reboot is a genuinely emotional deep cut. The hook-handed mercenary was a fan favorite from the 1987 Cannon Films era, and his return raises one very loud question that the studio has yet to answer.

Karg’s Live-Action Return in the ‘Masters of the Universe’ Reboot

The character was never supposed to be in the original 1987 movie at all. Trap Jaw was actually planned to be a threat in the film, but after all the designs that had to be put together at great cost and the already large and colorful cast of villains, the film decided to fulfill his role with Karg, an original character, instead. That bit of production trivia is exactly why Karg’s return now feels so poetic.

In the 2026 reboot, both characters finally share the screen together. Karg is set to reappear in the upcoming movie by Amazon MGM Studios as one of the Evil Warriors of Skeletor, now alongside Trap Jaw. The reboot is essentially correcting the original casting compromise nearly four decades later, giving fans the lineup that almost was back in ’87.

Mattel even confirmed his presence through merchandising before the trailers caught up. Mattel Creations’ Brick Shop revealed its ‘Masters of the Universe’ Clash at Snake Mountain Building Set, and the description indicates it is based on the battle between the Heroes of Eternia and Skeletor from the film, with the set including 12 NanoWorld figures featuring Pig Boy, Karg, and Gygor, deep cuts that no one would have expected to make an appearance.

The new design also drops some breadcrumbs about the character’s tone. This new design keeps the hook hand but does tone down the hair and gives the character a more militarized costume as well.

The Mystery Actor Behind the Hook-Handed Henchman

Here is where things get strange. Despite a steady drumbeat of casting announcements throughout 2024 and 2025, Amazon MGM Studios has not publicly confirmed who is playing Karg in the new film. The character has been spotted, screen-grabbed, and even immortalized in tie-in toys, yet his performer remains uncredited in major outlets.

That silence stands out, especially compared to the parade of confirmed villains. In December, Leto was confirmed for the role of Skeletor, alongside Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops. Even smaller roles have been publicly announced, with sites like He-Mania naming actor James Apps as Spikor and Arun Bassi as Pig Boy.

Karg, by contrast, keeps slipping through promo cycles without a name attached. As part of ComicBook’s Summer Preview, the outlet teamed up with Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios to reveal a new look at three of the classic villains set to appear in the movie, with the exclusive image showing the best look yet at Spikor, Goat Man, and Karg, who was previously played by Roger Towers in the 1987 movie. Even there, the original actor gets credited while the new performer does not.

The most likely explanation is a heavy practical makeup or prosthetic build that the studio wants to save for a bigger reveal. Given Karg’s signature ghoulish look, it is not hard to imagine a recognizable face hiding under the grey skin and yellow eyes.

How Karg Fits Into the 2026 He-Man Movie’s Villain Lineup

Travis Knight’s reboot is leaning hard into a packed roster of bad guys. Amazon MGM Studios has premiered a new TV spot for the upcoming live-action ‘Masters of the Universe’ feature, this one putting the focus on the villains, with good looks at Jared Leto’s Skeletor, Alison Brie’s Evil-Lyn, Sam C. Wilson’s Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson’s Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, along with confirmation that Karg from the original 1980s film is also here.

Karg traditionally serves as a high-ranking enforcer rather than a top-tier threat, which makes him a useful narrative tool. Karg was a fierce, hook-handed Commander who held a high rank in Skeletor’s army. Slotting him beneath Evil-Lyn and Trap Jaw gives the film a layered villain hierarchy without overcrowding Skeletor’s spotlight.

His inclusion also signals just how committed the production is to fan service. The new Amazon MGM film ‘Masters of the Universe’ looks to be very faithful to the source material, attested by the inclusion of this popular character. Pulling a deep cut like Karg out of the vault, instead of inventing a generic foot soldier, says everything about Knight’s approach.

The director has been vocal about wanting to honor the franchise’s roots. According to He-Mania’s reporting on the recent featurette, the mission of the film was to be as faithful to the original 1980s animation as possible, a guiding principle that explains why so many vintage characters are crowding into Eternia.

Why Karg’s Inclusion Has Longtime He-Man Fans Buzzing

The reaction within the He-Man community has been part nostalgia, part detective work. After the most recent behind-the-scenes drop, fans on He-Mania were already zooming in on background frames trying to spot Karg in the action, with one commenter excitedly noting that Karg was sneaking in that last shot of the featurette.

Beyond just spotting him, fans are dissecting what his renewed presence means for the broader story. The 1987 Karg was an inquisitor and a coward who survived through sheer self-preservation, traits that translate well into a modern adaptation hungry for personality rather than faceless henchmen. A version of Karg with the same grovelling instincts could give Leto’s Skeletor someone disposable to bully on screen.

There is also a melancholic context to the character’s return. Roger Sweet, one of the fathers of He-Man, passed away on Masters of the Universe Day at age 80. The wave of new featurettes and reveals, including Karg’s, dropped during the same fan celebration that mourned one of the franchise’s architects, lending the rollout an unexpectedly bittersweet weight.

What about you, are you hoping Karg gets more screen time than he did in the Dolph Lundgren days, and do you have a guess about which mystery performer Amazon MGM is hiding under that hook hand and grey makeup before the June release.
