The first season of Dutton Ranch ended with one shocking moment after another, leaving fans with plenty of questions before Season 2. From a deadly murder to Carter’s kidnapping, the finale changed the future for nearly every major character. Now, stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have shared new details about what those final moments mean and where the story could go next.

Speaking with TV Insider after the finale aired, the actors reflected on Beth and Rip’s emotional journey and explained why everything that happened in Season 1 was designed to push the couple into unfamiliar territory.

Unlike Yellowstone, where Beth and Rip often controlled every situation around them, Dutton Ranch placed them in a completely different position. They arrived in Texas with almost nothing after losing everything they built in Montana. Throughout the season they struggled to adapt, made mistakes, and found themselves surrounded by enemies they barely understood. According to Hauser, that change was intentional from the very beginning.

“The nucleus of the three of these characters, Carter, Beth, and Rip, early on, everything gets spun on its heels and for good reason. We needed to start these three characters from literally the ashes and going to a new environment, a new place, and see them on their back foot for the first time.” He added that seeing the characters struggle makes them feel more real than ever before.

“These characters have always been on offense… It’s now about these characters coming from nothing and watching them build. What I love the most is watching them stumble through it at times.”

That struggle reaches its breaking point in the finale when Mariano’s cartel kidnaps Carter. For Beth and Rip, everything else immediately becomes secondary. Hauser believes that single event will define the next chapter of the series. “There’s an unwavering love between these two characters, and what’s going to bring them closer is getting their son back.” Reilly agreed without hesitation.

“We’re going to see them tear up Texas to get him back. When Beth says, ‘They want us, then they’re going to have us,’ I think all of the audience knows what she means.” Hauser simply added, “Exactly.”

The finale also revealed the complicated truth behind Beulah Jackson’s connection to Mariano and the criminal operation running through the 10-Petal Ranch. While Beth and Rip discovered that Beulah had hidden dangerous secrets, Reilly does not believe she is the true villain of the story.

Instead, she sees Beulah as someone who made terrible choices while trying to protect her family. “Beulah’s been caught up in so much throughout her whole life… I do feel like there is growth for them to come together potentially.”

She even believes Beth may eventually work alongside Beulah despite everything that has happened. “I also would love Beth and Rip to collaborate with Beulah. It has to be on a new, level field now after what’s happened, but I don’t think Beulah is the true enemy of them.”

For Hauser, however, the real threat is Mariano. Although viewers only saw a small amount of the cartel leader during Season 1, he expects the character to become much more important moving forward. Another actor he is especially excited to see more of is Ed Harris, who plays Everett McKinney. According to both stars, Everett’s role is only beginning.

Hauser praised the legendary actor and said he hopes audiences see much more of him in Season 2. Reilly agreed and suggested that the series is growing into an ensemble drama rather than simply focusing on Beth and Rip.

“This is not the Beth and Rip show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there’s four lead characters, five. Annette Bening and Ed Harris… they made us legit. We could have just been a little soapy spinoff, and we’re not because of them.” The actors also discussed whether Texas has truly become home for Beth and Rip. While the couple is trying to build a future there, neither believes it can replace Montana.

Reilly explained that they simply have no choice right now. “Montana will always be home for Beth and Rip, but they can’t go back. They have nothing. They’ve got no money. They’ve got no livelihood.”

Still, she admitted she hopes their story eventually brings them home. “Cole and I secretly harbor a hope that maybe at the end of this story we leave them back in Montana.”

The conversation with TV Insider also touched on how Dutton Ranch connects to the wider Yellowstone universe, especially with the possibility of crossover storylines involving Luke Grimes’ Marshals series. Both Reilly and Hauser acknowledged that the timing of events across the shows has led fans to speculate about shared story threads, particularly after both seasons ended with kidnappings.

Reilly responded cautiously when asked about whether the two shows were intentionally linked. “Maybe [smiles].” Hauser, meanwhile, made it clear he would welcome any chance to reunite with former Yellowstone castmates. “What I will say is I’d love to work with Luke. We saw him in New York for the Upfronts… I just love him, man. I miss him.” Reilly also shared that she feels the same way about the original cast. “I miss him too.”

Hauser added that a crossover would feel natural given their shared history. “If there’s a way to somewhere down the road do something special where he comes and visits us or if we go to Montana, great.” Reilly expanded on that idea, saying she would love to see more familiar faces return to the franchise.

“We were all very close… we miss them very much. So the more we can get back in, that’s what we’re fighting for, Cole and I.”

Another major topic from the finale was Monica Dutton’s death, which was referenced in connection to events from Marshals. Reilly explained that while the characters in Dutton Ranch exist in the same universe, the timing of events means not every moment from other series will appear directly on screen.

She said that Beth and Rip would have likely been aware of Monica’s death and attended the funeral, even if it was not shown in the series. “There has been some connection, and our story started after that.” She also admitted that some narrative gaps could be addressed in future seasons.

“That’s something that was a missed opportunity, quite honestly… I think we can see where there are gaps.” Both actors agreed that Season 2 gives them a chance to refine the story and strengthen the emotional connections between characters.

Hauser summed up their mindset heading into the next season by focusing on escalation rather than resolution. “When he gets kidnapped. It’s game on.” Reilly echoed that sentiment, describing Season 2 as a chance for Beth and Rip to step back into full force after a difficult first season.

“Now, once they’ve got their feet and they can assert themselves… I don’t think there’s going to be any stopping them.” The season 1 finale of Dutton Ranch is now streaming on Paramount+, with Season 2 currently in development.
