Kevin Costner is closely linked with the Western genre, especially after his success in projects like Yellowstone and his passion project Horizon: An American Saga. One of his most important films, Dances With Wolves, is now set to leave Prime Video on May 31, according to streaming availability updates reported in the entertainment coverage.

The film, which runs for 181 minutes, was released in 1990 and marked Costner’s debut as a director. It is based on the 1988 novel by Michael Blake, who also wrote the screenplay. Costner plays Lieutenant John J. Dunbar, a Union Army officer who is stationed on the American frontier after the Civil War. While living in isolation, he forms a relationship with a nearby Lakota community, which slowly changes his understanding of identity, culture, and conflict.

The production of Dances With Wolves was not simple. It faced early rejection from several studios because Westerns were considered outdated at the time, and the script’s length also caused concern. The film was eventually made with support from Orion Pictures after Costner helped secure funding by selling foreign distribution rights in multiple regions. It was shot in South Dakota and Wyoming, with much of the Lakota dialogue translated for authenticity by Doris Leader Charge of Sinte Gleska University.

When it was released in 1990, the film became a major success. It earned strong reviews for its direction, acting, cinematography, and music. It went on to gross over $400 million worldwide and became the fourth highest-grossing film of that year. At the Academy Awards, it received 12 nominations and won 7 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Costner. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

The film is now widely seen as a major moment in Hollywood history because it helped revive interest in Western films. It has also been preserved in the United States National Film Registry as a culturally significant work.

Dances With Wolves will be removed from Prime Video at the end of May. The story follows Dunbar’s time with the Lakota people as he begins to question his role in the military and the broader expansion into the American West. A sequel novel titled The Holy Road was published in 2001, but no film adaptation has been made, and Costner has previously said he would not return for a sequel.
