That framing carries extra weight, given how reluctant the Russo Brothers initially were to even take on this project. Joe Russo has revealed that it was actually Kevin Feige’s idea to bring Downey back as Doctor Doom following his heroic death as Iron Man in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, describing that conversation as something that had been had a while ago.

Even with Downey Jr personally pushing for their involvement, the directors were not immediately convinced. Joe Russo explained that Downey tried to talk them into directing Doomsday and Secret Wars, but they initially said no, admitting they simply did not have a story or a clear way into the material, leaving them resistant for a while.

What ultimately changed their minds was not Downey’s involvement alone, but a specific story pitch from a longtime collaborator. Joe Russo credited Endgame writer Steve McFeely with bringing them the idea that finally convinced them to sign on, recalling that the moment McFeely pitched his concept, they immediately recognized it as the story that needed to be told, calling it a genuinely powerful narrative.

That story ultimately became the foundation for both ‘Doomsday’ and its follow-up, ‘Secret Wars,’ giving the Russo Brothers a clear enough vision to finally commit to returning to the franchise that made them one of Hollywood’s most in-demand directing duos.

Pairing Evans and Downey’s returns together rather than staggering them across separate films appears to be a deliberate storytelling choice rather than simple scheduling convenience. Given how deeply intertwined Steve Rogers and Tony Stark’s arcs have always been throughout the franchise, having both actors reappear within the same story creates a symmetry that closes out one era of Marvel storytelling while simultaneously opening the door to whatever comes next.

That dynamic becomes even more layered considering Downey is not returning as Stark at all, but as the villainous Doctor Doom, a character with an entirely different relationship to Steve Rogers than Tony Stark ever had. Balancing that history with an entirely new dynamic between the two actors gives this reunion far more narrative complexity than a straightforward legacy cameo.

With production wrapped and marketing now in full swing following the film’s first trailer release, fans finally have insight into just how deliberately this reunion was constructed behind the scenes. Knowing that even Robert Downey Jr’s involvement was not enough to secure the Russo Brothers without the right story adds real weight to how carefully this crossover has been built.
